I agree about the sugar. I kept most anything besides water to a minimum. I did drink about one cup of herbal tea per day and my doc said that if I got too weak I could have broth, and I did do that sometimes. I was very weak during my fast and for part of it I was staying at a friend's third floor walk-up apartment so I stayed in most days and kept contact with the world thru my phone. I'm a teacher with summers off so I was able to do this--I would not have done it if I'd had to go to work and face special needs teenagers every day!
As for the protein shakes--I've read that it's a very bad idea to do this--some people have died from consuming only protein during a fast. I'm sure there's a scientific explanation for that but don't do it! You would be better off to eat just fat on a fast--it's ketogenic that way.
