since i struggle with this all of the time, the best thing i have found is to write everything down and pay attention to portion sizes. eat what you want, but know what a serving size REALLY is!

Only shop from the perimeter of the supermarket. Cook all your own meals from whole, unprocessed foods.
Emphasize quality over quantity.

Excellent point. High Fructose Corn Syrup is bad! I watched a tv program and the introduction of HFCS and the rise in obesity share a very similar timeline. I am not saying that is the only reason for the rise in obesity-of course lack of exercise on overeating are the main reasons-but HFCS is very bad. It is not good for you at all. However, it is much cheaper to replace sugar with HFCS and that is what a lot of companies do.

Yes, Atari came out at the same time as HFCS as well. But HFCS is dangerous because your body thinks its fat, not sugar, and stores it as such. People who use artificial sweeteners tend to be hungrier and eat more. Also, eat breakfeast every day.

Well, I eat like a pig one meal a week. Yes, I'll order a big monster plate of spaghetti and eat more than I should... then I'll go after dessert. I'll pick one meal (either breakfast, lunch, or dinner) on Friday and that will be the time I don't eat... "in moderation." The rest of the week I'm a health nut.

Don't move to places with high obesity rates. (It is contagious)
ride a bike at least three days a week.
