How many times do you stare at yourself in the mirror and wish that you had some magical way of changing your body from the way it is now to the way you’ve always wished it would be? How often do you think “I could stand to lose a pound or two.” How often are these wishes and thoughts paired with wishes for more energy for exercising, more time for cooking, more desire to eat healthy foods and less cravings for salty and fatty junk you can get at a fast food restaurant? These are common wishes. Even if you like your current weight, you have probably wished to weigh less at least once in your life. Here are some weight loss tips and hints that you can use to help you get started the right way.

Don’t drink anything but water. You might find this hard to believe but one of the easiest ways to drastically cut down on how many calories you consume is to cut out the soda, the juice, the energy drinks, the booze and all of the other drinks you take in except for water. Your water should be cold. Water does not have any calories. It helps you stay hydrated and contributes to your health. Even if you just delete two servings of soda each day you will be cutting out at least two hundred calories (or more, depending on the brand and type of soda you drink). In addition to cutting down on your calorie intake, replacing these other drinks with water helps you cut down on things like sugar, high fructose corn syrup and other nefarious ingredients that do nothing for your health.

Don’t call your new eating habit a diet. Call it “making healthy choices” or something similar. Many people feel that the word “diet” has taken on a negative feeling. You are more likely to resent what you are doing if you call it “dieting” than if you call it “eating healthier” or “eating natural food.” Instead of using a negative word, use positive or action based words to tell people about your new lifestyle choices. This will help you to feel more proactive about what you’re doing and you’ll have an easier time telling people who might have started to wonder why you’re suddenly eating differently.

Find a distraction when you are working out. If you use a treadmill try putting the treadmill in front of a television set or try listening to music. When you’re on the stationary bike read a book! Distracting yourself keeps your mind off of the hard work your body is doing. If you have something else to think about you will have an easier time of working out. Distractions also help you keep boredom at bay. If you get bored during your workout you are more likely to slack off and then you won’t see the results that you were hoping to see.

Lots of people are concerned with weight loss. Almost everybody thinks that they have some weight to lose. The correct approach makes losing weight a perfectly healthy process. If you don’t approach weight loss with a healthy mindset you probably won’t lose any pounds at all and you will be more likely to gain back most (if not all) of the pounds you do manage to lose. If you aren’t sure how to go about losing weight, you should ask a doctor or trained health care professional to help you.

I find water consumption to be very important for weight loss. I sip water throughout the day and that easily diverts my attention from even remotely focusing on food. In addition, it is so good for my skin. I think part of the reason why I don't have wrinkles and such is because I drink a lot of water. I drink only water except for the occasional Sparking Ice beverage.

Also helpful is understanding that your weight is not static. You will gain and lose frequently. If it's a pattern of weight gain then that's another story.

Your suggestion to drink only water is very good and should be one of the cornerstones of a good nutritional program. But if someone is able to effectively read a book or watch TV while using an exercise machine, they're not working at it nearly hard enough. I set exercise machines to as much resistance as I can sustain and it's all I can do to keep going-------I don't need any distractions.

Yes and no. There are times when I'm focused on the burn and there are times when I'm just committed to moving. Most Saturday mornings I'm watching soccer and instead of lounging on the sofa with my feet propped up on the coffee table, I'm on my treadmill walking while I watch. I'll get in 4-5 miles of slow walking during a time where I'd otherwise not be moving at all.

However people move, it's always a good thing.

For flatter abs, make carbs 45–65 percent (202–292 grams based on an 1,800-calorie diet) of your total daily calories. Balance is the key here, so don't go below 45 percent (202 grams), or above 65 percent (292 grams), which can lead to water retention, bloating and temporary weight gain that shows up in your middle.

When you eat carbs, they break down into glucose, which is stored as glycogen in the muscles and liver. When glycogen is stored, it carries with it three times its own weight as water, compared to no water at all for protein and fat, according to Peter Garlick, Ph.D., a professor at Stony Brook University in New York. If you eat an extremely high-carb diet, you may store excess water, experience bloating and gain temporary water weight. (This is why people who go on no- or very low-carb diets can initially lose weight so quickly. They're really just losing water.) To avoid bloating and weight gain caused by consuming too many or the wrong kind of carbs, follow these weight loss tips:

Weight loss tips # 1: Fill up on fruits and vegetables as part of your healthy high fiber diet. These are the least bloat-promoting foods because they contain plenty of water and fewer carbs and calories for their volume.

Weight loss tips # 2: Avoid high-carb/empty-calorie foods like fast food, snack cakes, cookies and candy. These foods are high in simple carbs and sodium, which cause bloating and weight gain, and are low in fiber and nutrients.

Weight loss tips # 3: Focus on eating a balanced healthy diet. For best results, eat at least three to five, 4-ounce servings of veggies (15–25 grams of carbs); two to four, 4-ounce servings of fruit (30–60 grams of carbs) and about 1 cup (8 ounces cooked or 2 ounces dry, or 2 slices of bread) of whole grains per meal (90 grams per day).

Weight loss tips # 4: Make sure you eat enough calories, from complex healthy carbs, lean protein and healthy fats. If you don't get an adequate number of calories (most women require at least 1,800 per day to lose weight, 2,000 to maintain and 2,400 or more if they're very active), you risk temporarily lowering your metabolism, which can also bring on bloating.

A good guideline to follow throughout your flat abs diet:

Don't cut any more than 250-500 calories below what you need to maintain your weight from your balanced healthy diet, advises C. Wayne Callaway, M.D., a metabolic specialist in Washington, D.C.
