the great mystery is that as you age you store fat better and better.
unless you go into starvation mode or excercise to the pint of injury, the fat grows.

I think its a build up of toxic load on the liver, panc. doesnt function like it used to, not as active, digestion is poor from low fiber and the body adapts to dieting, less lean muscle tissue and hormonal imbalances. Its why ANYONE who really has a lot to lose should maintain every 15-20 pounds or so and let the skin and body relax and heal. You cant control everything and not everyone can exercise but you can control what goes on your plate always.

I think I read somewhere that the average person in good health, needs about 1600 calories per day to just maintain life with no activity. That's just lying in bed, doing nothing. Anything else needs more, but not so much that the body stores it as emergency fat for later use.

I bet you are underestimating your calories. Many people do. Get a food scale to learn how to eyeball portions. What you actually need as an indiviual is based on your RMR. Everyones RMR is different.
My RMR is only a little over 1200 now. So that 1600 wouldnt work for me.
Eat 1200 cals a day and get 30 minutes of any activity daily
Half your intake should be veggies or fruit
You will lose weight
(just an easy diet plan I followed a lot during loss phases)

Fats, Ketones, And Ketosis
"As we have seen in previous articles, when the glucose available for energy use exceeds the tissues' needs, the glucose, under the influence of insulin, is converted to glycogen and to body fat. But when there are more ketone bodies available for energy use than are needed by the tissues, they cannot be converted into fat storage. They accumulate in the blood, and are excreted in the urine. This is called ketosis.
One of the ketone bodies is called acetone, and it is the chemical that is detected on urine ketone dip sticks.
Ketone production results from the breakdown of body fats. The excretion of the excess ketones in the urine is important because the presence of large amounts of ketone bodies in the blood threatens to upset the acid-alkaline balance of the blood, and thereby, the balance in the tissues."

Nice try, but wrong again....
Ketones are not found in the urine of normal healthy adults dieting or otherwise....
Diabetics will spill ketones into the urine if they do not have their blood sugar well controlled....
Also ketones are break down products of fats and proteins...
Ketones do not equal fats...
Ketones do not produce "an oil slick" as you previously alluded

NO! The "average person" is such a blend of different body styles and lifestyles, no one can go by an "average person"s needs. Every body is different, and will have FAR different caloric requirements based on their own individual criteria. I do 30 min of intense cardio every day, and 2 or 3 LONG workouts at the gym every week. I have to stay around/under 1200 cal a day, or I WILL gain weight. This is my normal routine...been doing this for years, so I know how my body responds. Everyone needs to learn how their own body responds, and act accordingly.
