I love old fashion oats chewy, not slimy, with brown sugar and skim milk, YUM YUM!!!!
AH HAH! So that is the problem! I detest the slime and I refuse to eat the stuff. But if it were chewy instead of slimy, well that would be great. I must buy some of the old fashioned stuff ASAP! Thanks.
That's why I stay away from the flavored instant oatmeal.
I know it sounds weird, but I do tend to prefer the instant stuff a bit more. I've found, at least w/ myself, that when making oatmeal from scratch, I tend to top it off w/ too much stuff (honey, raisins, craisins, various nuts, brown sugar, berries), so for me, it ends up being more caloric. plus, I like the built in portion control of the packets. I look for low sugar, more fiber brands (I like the Kashi instant oatmeal a lot, and there's another brand that comes in a green box, but I forget the name that's also pretty healthy) and tend not to add anything to them, other than frozen berries
but I do like making oatmeal from scratch. I use skim milk (I don't like oatmeal w/ water) and toss in toss of frozen fruits, esp. my favorite tropical fruit blend (mangos, papayas, pineapple, all yummy!). I add a bit of honey or low sugar syrup. my aunt used to make a very creamy oatmeal creamier than Cream of Wheat, almost drinkable) by tossing it into the blender for a bit and adding more milk. it is very tasty, especially when she tossed in a bit of baker's chocolate
I love mine with thawed (or fresh) blueberries, dried cranberries, chopped pecans, cinnamon, and a squirt of pancake syrup (I do South Beach, so I do the sugar free syrup now instead of what I used to do...brown sugar!).
