Polycystic Overy Syndrom and weight
I had a Dr. recently tell me that I was probably PCOS but since I had never purposely tried to have kids (though this may explain why I never had an accidental pregnancy) and was entering menopause I didn't think too much about it.
But today while surfing health diet books I ran into a link between many of my symptoms (not just infertility and facial hair) and PCOS.
It can be more of a health risk than I thought and has some tie ins with insulin resistance and insulin resistant related weight gain.
So..since I need to improve my diet and exercise regardless and desperately lose weight (am officially obese) I think I'm going to try sort of....not leaping in but just...changes toward better health by
working more portion control
No Seconds, limited sweets, limited snack
move around more, even just a little here and there
and use this as my nutritional diet approach; Start investigating the insulin resistant diet (I hate reading diet, health books though so I'm not sure how that will go)
Hopefully this will stop my gain which is oddly scary these days - last year or two I have not changed anything but just put on pounds

Have you had confirmation with your doctor regarding the PCOS issue? Ask for a second opinion form another doctor if you think it is necessary. They can suggest a diet you can work on.
Will power and sheer determination are the key to success. If you are saying you are an official obese , DO NOT jump into any certain diet right ahead. I suggest you lessen first your food intake. If you usually eat 5 cups for lunch , work on 4 cups for a week, then 3, then 2. In such a way, your body will also have the time adjusting to the amount it will be receiving. Yes, you need to move more. For me, exercise is not just gym and treadmill, walking or running a few miles, even doing chores around the house are already forms of my exercise.
Good luck!

I'm no doctor (heck, I don't even play one on TV) but I agree with this recommendation. PCOS is often "suspected" but needs to be confirmed. Elevated androgens, facial or chest hair, acne, menstrual irregularities and weight gain can indeed be due to PCOS but may also be due to other factors. Even a dormant ovarian cyst can mimic PCOS symptoms that may be relieved by removing the cyst. If PCOS is confirmed then as you mentioned, developing insulin resistance might be a possibility. There are also possible treatments to help manage PCOS, since it is primarily hormonally driven, but I commend you for looking for a holistic, nutritional approach. I would consult with a doctor/nutritionist sooner rather than later on the best eating plan for you, as the glycemic index of the food you eat may be more of a factor for you the average person. Better to get ahead of it and even if it's not PCOS, no harm done. Regardless, I agree that exercise would be of definitely be of benefit to you.
Hopefully it's not PCOS, but you need to know for sure, and keep in mind that it is something that many women out there live with and so can you. If as a result you adopt a healthier lifestyle to help manage it naturally, maybe that's the silver lining in all this. Take heart and all the best to you.
