We have a 19 yr old Lhasa, that has had a couple strokes and is partially blind and deaf. The vet says his heart is strong and he could last a year or two longer. However, he has gotten his nights & days mixed up and sleeps mostly through out the day and howls during the night.
We've tried night lights, feeding him earlier/later/more etc.. trying to get him up during the day, benedryl, melantonin etc..nothing seems to work.
Any reasonable suggestions?
Sounds like dementia maybe. My one cat would start to meow very loud and deep very early in the morning for months and months before he passed. He was 18. I tried feeding him different hours too, nothing worked. I just learned to wake up every time and put the pillow over my head to muffle it. Don't think there's much you can do for it. Good luck!
joliefille -- you may have already done this since you said the vet says his heart is strong, but have you had your vet check him recently?
in feb, my 13-year old shih tzu started sleeping more heavily during they day/lighter during the night (as in waking up every couple of hours and running down the ramp off the bed as if it were morning)... and, come to find out, he had a herniated disc in his neck and was reacting to the pain. now that we've finally found a successful treatment for the pain, he is sleeing through the night again! (knock wood that it stays this way!)
Thanks for the replies. We had him to the vet a couple weeks ago for an eye infection and had a general check up. The eye infection cleared up quickly with antibiotics, but the vet doesn't want to give him any sedatives, again due to his age.
I also think its just dementia, but he has a suprisingly loud bark and we live in a condo, so I don't want it to become an issue with neighbors.
Maybe a tylenol pm?
