With the other scar on the dog's other leg I have to wonder if the poster wasn't a minor from a family that fights or raises fighting dogs. That would explain the "no vet suggestions" stance beyond the failure to have $$, IMO.

I hate that possibility.

I'm hoping this its just a case of a minor downloading the pics from somewhere on the internet & posting them for reaction.

Nothing like letting your loved ones suffer.

Keep up the great work.

Keep in mind that vet visits are mandatory for responsible dog ownership. If you are going to keep this dog, you owe her routine vet care. However, in this particular situation, if you can manage to keep the wound healing healthily, you might be able to avoid the vet. That's a big IF. At the first sign that the wound is infected -- GO to the vet. Explain your situation. Most vets will work with you, offering a payment plan, or a hardship discount. The dog's health is the important thing.

Keeping the wound clean and dry is the important thing. Use clean, clear water with an antiseptic wash.

If there is any opaque "ooze" then you will need to go heavy on the peroxide. Betadine is a dark red (staining) antiseptic that is available at your pharmacy, that used to be the staple in helping to heal open flesh wounds on humans. It is more effective than peroxide.

After the wound is cleaned and dry, if you can keep her from licking it without the cone, let it stay open to air -- sunshine is even better. If she licks too much -- keeping it damp, and irritating the flesh (it gets red), then cone her so she cannot reach it. Cones are available at most pet stores, or you can get one from the vet clinic.

Do not remove any scab. As long as the scab forms over a clean wound, it is good. When washing a wound that has scabbed, dab it, do NOT rub it.
