Just wondering if there were any Bull Mastiff owners out there or people who knew a bit about the breed.

I was under the impression they were fairly loyal dogs and committed to the family although stern training was required when they were young.

We have a 10 month old French Bulldog puppy who is great - we are thinking of getting a Bull Mastiff in the next 12 months or so.

How are they with other dogs, especially smaller breeds?

Any info on this breed would be much appreciated

They are a good loyal breed but pairing a huge dog with a tiny dog is usually not a great idea for accidents and stuff IMHO.

Fair comment - when you mean accidents, do you mean rough and tumble with each other?

Not sure if it would make a difference, but our "Frenchie" is a largish male (well for a Frenchie ) and if we opt for a Bull Mastiff, we'll go for a female. I've heard that generally speaking it is better to get a male and a female if you own two dogs (as they evidently get on better).

I've seen a few Bull Mastiffs around some of the parks in our area and have become interested in the breed.

my doxie was ripped in half by a mastiff the neighbors bull mastiff would jump out of the window to get to other dogs. I believe this is more from lack of training than the breed most mastiffs are laid back and pretty gentle .
just socialize your pets with other dogs and people at a young age .dont allow any dominate responses

I am a mastiff (not bull mastiff) owner and agree about the socialization.

I've only known a couple of bull mastiffs, but the ones I met were very pleasant with other dogs, large or small--and they were well-socialized. The bull mastiffs were quite agile for such a large dog. Even my somewhat larger mastiffs are capable of carefully stepping over my cat, who rarely bothers to get out of the way.

I used to go to a mastiff meet-up, and quite a few of the owners also had pugs in their household. (I've been told the two breeds are distantly related, but I do not really know.) Anyway, they seemed like they got along fine.

My friend years ago bred "English" Mastiffs...now that's a LOT of dog. They are gentle giants from my experience... going to her kennel often. They are MAJOR slobber's, but SWEETHEARTS.
"Bull" mastiffs...aren't they like English, just a bit smaller than English.

Like everyone else said... as long as you socialize...exercise & train at a young age, I would think your pups would do just fine.

I had an English Mastiff - wonderful dog - and had small breed dogs with her. She was always very gentle. Training and socialization are vital though. But I think any dog is a wonderful breed and needs training and socializing. Just make sure your lifestyle fits the breed.

Thanks for all the comments and insights - very much appreciated. Ultimately it'll come down to us in the sense that the more training and socialisation we put in at the start, the better. "Scampi", our Frenchie, is a delight but he needs a lot of reminders who is the "pack leader" . We introduced to him to as many people and other dogs as we could at an early age and now he has no problems at all and loves other people and dogs.

At the moment we live in an apartment, but intend to buy either a townhouse (with a backyard) or a house within the next 12 months. It is definitely out of the question to get a Bull Mastiff until we at least have the space for one.

But.....keep the comments coming. Keen to learn more about the breed and people's experiences with them

PS I have attached a few photos of Scampi

Unless the apartment says no dogs over a certain size, don't be so sure. When I had my mastiff I lived in a tiny 2 bedroom apartment with me, a butt head () and three cats. Mastiffs are pretty laid back couch potatoes for the most part, so having tons of room where they can run and play isn't all that huge a deal. I took her on three half hour walks a day and it was plenty.

I don't know too much about the breed but I can tell you I was walking my lab puppy last night (9 months old and 50 lbs) and I saw a girl holding a bull mastiff on the side of the road. My dog usually wants to make friends with EVERYONE. I asked the girl, as I always do when seeing other dogs walked in my neighborhood, is your dog friendly? She said only to dogs her size or larger, not a small dog like yours. I was really taken back b/c my dog is not a "small" dog. She is medium sized. After this happend, I went home and told my husband the story. One of his friends owned a bull mastiff and I know it lived with another dog, a lab that the guys wife wanted. My husband told me the mastiff wasn't crazy about other dogs but did get along with the lab it lived with. I just wanted to share my story with you being you have another dog.

I'm sure other people on this site can answer your question more than I can but I wanted to share my experience with you being this just happend last night and I saw your question today.
