I have been owned by three different German Shepherd Dogs, not at the same time of course. Neither of the three have had much trouble out thinking me. They really seem to enjoy it.
I can COMPLETELY understand how it happens and I'm always and forever amazed by the judgement of 'how could you' that surrounds these things.
I will say, I get up in arms about this because the attitude of "how could you?" leads people to believe they're immune.
People who think they're immune to a problem aren't likely to take steps to prevent a problem.
What's more likely to save the lives of dogs/kids/etc...a firm belief that 'good parents/pet owners/whomever don't do x' or a recognition that 'we're all human, we should take steps to prevent this'?
Obviously, our culture works on option A--which, given the statistics of how often these things happen, doesn't WORK.
I firmly believe if you're capable of getting to someplace and wondering if you left the iron on/stove burner on/back door unlocked/etc,--things that could cost your your home and security, you're probably capable of, especially in times of severe stress/autopilot/illness/sleep deprivation, forgetting your cat/dog/kid.
My last dog, a yellow lab mix, would do this when I would run into the gas station to pay for gas.
The first time she did it, I am pretty sure it was an accident. But once she realized that leaning on the horn would get me to come out of the store immediately, it was game over for me. She was the best. dog. ever.
I always have a house full of dogs smarter than me. From figuring ways to get out of a fence, open a door, get into the fridge, etc, there's always something making me re-think my strategy!
