Unless it's a lone coyote, coyotes have no problem taking down a bigger dog. They are smart and tease dogs until they chase them, then lead them into a trap where they are surrounded by the pack. They did this to my large husky mix and luckily I was out and saw it happenening, as soon as the coyotes heard and saw me they all turned tail and ran.

Pink, will you pick one up for me? I've always wanted a panther of my own.

There are other threats out there besides coyotes.

I have 2 German Shorthaired Pointers. Spot, the boy, is about 75lbs and Lola, is about 55lbs. A pit climbed my 6ft fence and attacked Spot. I thought they were safe behind the fence and a locked gate but not so. My dogs never go outside unless I can supervise.

At one point a few years ago we had a neighbor with a pair of Cheetahs. Male was over 40 lbs. They were allowed in the backyard. Can you imagine a coyote coming over that wall? And once in that yard there was no way out.

It might be a different variety out here but back east I ran into a coyote that stood and looked as large as a moderately sized german sherpherd.
