Rin Tin Tin is not welcome at Petco Park. The German shepherd breed is one of as many as 15 that can’t take part in the San Diego Padres’ annual Dog Days of Summer promotion at the ball park.
Ted Lew learned this the hard way. He owns a German shepherd named Joey. He planned to take him to the event, which will be held next Friday.
He struck out, though.
At first he had no idea why. He had signed up early. His credit card had been charged for the ticket. The team’s explanation, which came in a form letter, was this: overwhelming demand and limited space.
That was hardly the truth.
It turned out that Lew was denied because his breed of dog is blacklisted by the Padres. It was only after Lew made several calls to the Padres that he learned about the ban.
The Padres say the breed restriction is for safety reasons, but they wouldn’t say just which breeds are off-limits. They would only say the number is between 10 and 15.
The list is part of an “internal document that we’re not at liberty to release,” Mark Guglielmo, vice president of ballpark operations for the Padres, said Friday...
I went to the Padres website hoping to find an email address that could be used to express displeasure at their policy. Nothing was available.
Should anyone feel like writing a letter protesting this here's some contact info;

I think that this is becoming a trend in the so-called "dog friendly" cities. Everytime I have researched housing in such cities, I have found them to be more restrictive regardless of all of the dog-friendly events, etc. Moreover, these are the cities that seem to be more aggressive (haha) re: banning certain breeds. I wonder if it isn't b/c the ideal has been compromised by a few bad apples?
If I lived in SD, I would rally every single person who has a dog to boycott the event. Dog owners need to fight such bans together (assuming that these bans aren't instigated or agreeable to small and/or "non-aggressive" dog owners). Complaining is lovely but hitting them where it hurts (i.e. their revenue) is the only thing that might make them reconsider.
Heck...buy a running scoreboard banner that states: "boycott PetCo for breed specific bans". That should make the San Diego news in "Petco Stadium".
Right? The irony is so ridiculous. But then, I've never known jocks to be applauded for their high intellect and reasoning skills. Perhaps they just need to be educated (if only!!)
