This is a shame.

Just 192 large egg companies own about 95 percent of laying hens in this country, down from 2,500 in 1987, according to United Egg Producers, an industry group. Most of those producers are concentrated in five states: Iowa, Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania and California.

"I don't think people have any idea when they see all these brand names in the stores that so many are coming from the same place," said Patty Lovera, assistant director of Food and Water Watch, a food safety organization. "It raises the stakes -- if one company is doing something wrong, it affects a lot of food."

I just try to buy food! We are very lucky to have farmers markets in San Diego year-round, selling even grass-fed meat, eggs and milk products. They are at different locations in the city every single day of the week. We buy 90% of our groceries there and end up eating what's in season, since the farmers only sell what is growing on their farm.

And to make this a dog related post, dogs are allowed at several of these markets since they are set up on the street, so PC goes and enjoys apple and peach samples while walking around!

I said safer, not fresher. I was referring to the inspection process. Didn't you read the part where I said I buy my eggs from a small, local farm because the eggs are better? Along with not caring about the conditions for the chickens, I've also never inquired into his safety record or when or if he's inspected. I just buy the eggs and move on.

Chicken lays egg. Farmers boxes (not cleans off, cause it's actually safer and better to not clean fresh eggs) and transports to the farmers market. Half the time, our eggs are "dirty." Not refrigerated, since you don't refrigerate fresh eggs. No need for some kind of special inspection, since these eggs literally just fell out of the hen and are still warm to the touch. There's your eggs!

I've actually questioned all the farmers at my market extensively. That's why they are there and they all invite people to come check out the farm to see where the food comes from. I love the way my grass-fed butcher raises his animals. I think it's awesome to see, especially for those with kids. The saddest thing in the world was when my teacher friend asked her 1st graders to draw a turkey. One kid drew the only turkey he knows, the one on the table on Thanksgiving, with no head. He had no idea that it's a real bird and that's just so sad to me.

But look on the bright side, the other 20 or so kids drew some demented version of the real bird! I saw the pictures, it's amazing what 6 year olds come up with!

LMAO!!! It's the artist version of "out of the mouths of babes."

PS. PC would like a bully stick right about now. My ESP just kicked in.

PC and MB are snoring right now. This heat is exhausting them! Luckily, it's dropping 20 degrees on Saturday! I'm afraid to tell you that heat to me is 88 degrees after what your summer has been like!
