It's taken a year to get our lab mix into the car without him going into total panic mode. However, he still wants out asap. I saw on It's the Dog or Me program a special harness used to secure a large dog to the seat belt mechanism--anyone know where to buy one?

We have this one and love it:

Bark Buckle UP (http://www.barkbuckleup.com/ProductsDetail.asp?ProductID=2&iView=1 - broken link)

We use it with the tether, so that he has more room to roam.

That makes no sense. Why does it have the seatbelt run through it? There is no tension in the seatbelt until there is sudden deceleration.

Just like you secure an infant car seat, you have to pull the belt down until there is tension.

Can't say I've had to do that yet

We have a harness with a tether that attaches right to teh loop.. no belt necessary. Was about 30$ from PetSmart.

Yea, we use that one with the tether. I posted a link to the tether as well, you have to buy that separately. I never actually bought these. My dog was chosen to model them at a car show in San Diego, and we were given many of them for free as a thank you.

I got one at PetSmart that clips into the seatbelt for the trip when I moved.

One trick I do when I take the dogs to the vet (a short trip) is to put the end of the leash between the car door and car so the end of the leash is hanging out a little bit at the top. I can hold onto the leash when I open the door so I don't have to worry about anyone making a run for it. It also keeps them from jumping over the seat
