I did have a Dachshund that would hide her food. Like under the blankets on the bed, I would pull back the covers and kibble would go flying across the room. She would hide it all over the house, you never knew where you were going to find pieces of dog food.
Ah, yes, the GSD's are very territorial when it comes to their toys! My GSD has a favorite ball (soft shell Sponge Bob) that she takes everywhere with her. She has never tried to stash it but she does drop it in her food bowl (and then proceeds to eat), which is something that her sister also did.

The funny thing is that if he can't find a good hiding place or if he can't dig a hole due to slate tile or hardwood, he'll go through the imaginary motions of digging a hole, place the bone in the middle of the imaginary hole and then use his snout to push imaginary dirt back on top of the bone in the imaginary hole - then he'll start whining in frustration when the bone isn't hidden since it's in an imaginary hole.

He's actually pretty smart otherwise.

i lol'd at the second story .... i have seen dave do similar..... and the look on his face is just priceless..... and then he gets even MORE frustrated when he looks up and sees me chuckling at him and his efforts.....

Sometimes I feel bad for laughing and throw a dishtowel over the bone for him. That fixes it and you can actually see a wave of relief and satisfaction wash over him and he goes about his other business.

I forgot........She would also go around the yard and collect all the tennis balls and stand over them. My male GSD would go nuts but would never think of trying to grab one. So he would bark non stop until I went and grabbed him one.

This is kind of funny but I had a Lab/Chow mix and I never seen her stash anything but her toys, bones and everything in my yard always seemed to disappear but it wasnt till she passed on and we got our Lab/Shepherd mix that I discovered where all these went. She must have hidden everything under our porch and you guessed my Lab/Shepherd mix dug it all up and brought it out. He thought he was in 7th heaven finding all these cool toys, bones, ect. There were even shoes and things I didnt recognize and since she never left our yard I dont know where they came from but Buddy sure enjoyed them. LOL

Dazzle is a stasher too .He takes things back to his crate and tucks them under the crate cushion Not just bones but toys or if I let him lick out a tuna can the can then gets hidden as well. He has quite the collection. He is a hoarder and soon may be seen on one of the TV shows about hoarders

Jazz use to pile all the toys right out in the open and then growl at Dash if he went near them .If he bothered them which he seldom did she would rush at him snarling. she does take a few special things to her crate and keeps them in there but does not put them under the cushion.

I have had all the dogs I have owned put a fresh bone behind a pillow on the couch or under a blanket on the couch or even my bed. Always fun to climb into bed and hit a bone. It is funny becasue they work so hard moving the blanket with their nose to get it just perfect then a few minutes later have to go back and look at the bone so have to start allover again.

Charlie used to do this, he used to hide only his rawhide and special treats. He would act like he was burying it in the couch with his nose and one time he actually got couch burn on the tip of his nose. If he caught us looking in the area he "buried" it or if he sees us paying attention while he's "burying" he would have to grab it and find a new spot. I used to think it was really cute...just make sure your dog never growls at you if you get too close to where his treat is buried. Make sure he doesn't guard it from you.

Yeah, that sounds about right. I get the impression that female GSD's view their toys as their "children" and are thus very possessive of them, especially around males. Your male sounds like the typical GSD male who is smart and does not dare approach a "possessed" toy b/c he knows that it would be akin to trying to get near and/or take a baby grizzly from its mother
