My son had taken his dog to the vet and had her treated for worms a few months ago and the dog still has worms. He has been treating her with worm medication you can purchase in the store because of money issues he can't afford to go back to the vet but continues to see worms in her stools.
He was aware of his money situation before taking in this dog but the dog was being abused and he agreed to take her in and is very fond of her and worried.
I have never had this happen in my years of owning dogs (lucky??)
Any insight would be greatly appreciated

You need the right treatment for the type of worm(s). Tapeworms: drontal; Roundworms: strongid. OR whatever the vet prescribes.

I have had many rescues. They have all had worms. If you don't treat them and also eradicate any contamination (bedding, fecal waste, etc.) on an ongoing basis, they're going to come back. Sometimes even with the correct protocol it takes a few trys to get rid of them.

Stop the Petsmart solutions and take the dog to the vet for proper diagnosis, treatment and advice.

Good luck.

i tried treating dogs with wormer purchased from the feed store.... that did NOT work.... called the vet and told them what was going on.... they gave me the proper wormer for the issue at hand without bringing the dogs in and it wasn't more than about $5 difference than what i paid for the wormer from the feed store.....

have your son call the vet and see if he can just pick up what he needs based on a description of what he is seeing....... saving an office visit and the attendant fees for that .....

This is not going to cost much more ( going thru a vet ) than buying over the counter stuff at the store. If your son can bring in a poop specimen with a worm in it for correct diagnosis, it should be problem solved.

If the dog has fleas then he is probably seeing tape worms. They are the worms that you usually see in poop. They look like a flat grain of rice. Even if you give him the meds for the worms if you don't treat the fleas they will/do come back.

Thanks for taking care of this pup

A dog can easily re-infect itself despite being wormed if the yard is not kept clean. All it takes is for them to step in poop and later lick their paws. So, while the pup is being wormed again and going forward, pick up the poop!

Keeper is right on. If it is tape worms, which are the flat grain of rice looking ones, they get them from fleas. You have to make sure that all the pets in the household are treated for fleas. My black lab kept getting them until I put a flea collar on the cat. That took care of the problem.

Talk to you vet first for the okay, but you can also use FOOD GRADE DE to kill worms & fleas, both internally and externally.

It's supposed to kill pin, hook, round, and whip worms. You'll have to put it in the dog's food for at least a couple of weeks, if not a month, depending on the type of worms you're trying to eliminate.

You can also dust the dog in the DE to kill parasites, and dust a potty area too to help keep problems away.

A long time ago, all there was for fleas was flea powder.

Shop around for prices as they vary quite a bit. Make sure it's Food Grade DE!
