Jazz and I both made it through the night and to the vets this AM. She has developed a corneal ulcer and it is a large one. Because she is not blinking much she was prone to this and we were trying to prevent it with the Genteal eye drops. But she may have scratched the eye and being as delicate as it is tore it. The vet gave me all my options again. I think if we were 100% certain this is cancer behind the eye I would stop right now but because the eye specialist is leaning towards a blocked zygomatic salivary gland I want to know which it is as the prognosis if it were that would be better so that now means an antibiotic eye drop every two hours ( yes it means waking up every two hours during sleep too!) genteal drops just as often now, oral antibiotics and rymidal, to try to get the ulcer to heal. Our big danger is it the eye could rupture if it does not heal.

Next my vet called the few places that do MRI's for animals and of course they are both 2-3 hrs away on a good traffic day. He did not know if any were even open but the one place which is down by my dad's empty house was open and said the earliest they can get her in is Monday. So I have called in sick at work and told them why I am doing so. Since everyone I work with knows what this dog means to me and how loosing her so soon after my dad would be so hard for me they are all saying just do what you have too. I am lucky as I do have supportive co workers as many of us have
worked together for over 20 years so are like a family

So tonight it will be the eye drops every two hours and tomorrow afternoon I pack the dogs and cat in the car and head to my dad's ( empty) house so we can get to the MRI place on Monday and hopefully after that MRI we will know if we are dealing with a blocked gland or a possible cancer as then decisions will be easier. If we still think it is cancer it will be totally heart breaking but at least I will know I did not put my queen dog down because of a blocked gland.

We are now a few hours into the medicines and already the swelling is down and the eye is not as mushy white looking so the inflammation appears to be stopping and hopefully this ulcer will heal . Maybe by Monday when we do the MRI we will have stabilized the ulcer made progress in the healing.

I know all of you that love your dogs can imagine how difficult this is and I do appreciate your support more then you can imagine.Thank you.

I wonder if a warm moist compress (washcloth) held gently over the eye would help the gland drain? This is what is done for humans with blocked glands close to the surface or for styes on the eyelid. Might be comforting too.

I know you are worried I just read your post. I had the same thing with my Pug and had to do the drops, Genteal drops the whole nine yards. I am keeping all fingers, toes and paws crossed for you and Jazz. I know this is difficult for you and just know we are all here for you and Jazz.

Right now I am playing the waiting game. That awful game that any of you with sick pets that have had tests done know. Jazz did fine with the MRI but was very out of it all night would fall down and stumble when she walked but is OK this AM.

The radiologist has to read it then send results to my vet and my vet is off until tomorrow so hopefully tomorrow he will have some news for me.

They did send me home with the CD copy of the MRI and just like with Cat scan CD's the reader is on the CD so you can open it in any computer so I did just that. First I have to say Jazz has a cute little brain! Next what ever that is it is large but looks very confined possibly because it is in the boney eye socket. That right eye is so displaced yet from the outside it does not look that bad. While I am some what good at picking things out on a CT , not so with an MRI as I am not sure if what I see is fluid filled or a tissue mass so guess I have to wait and see what the radiologist says all I can say is it is large but does not seem to extend into the brain or have alot of fingers.

I am hoping for the best but prepaired for the wosrt. I am accepting all prayers or positive thoughst.

Prayers and positive thoughts sent your way. Hopefully you'll get some good news from your vet. It sounds like Jazz is in good hands with the specialists.

:c rying:It is over! My heart is breaking but I had to do right by Jazz and let her go today. This morning she got up went down the stairs to go outside to pee and as she did so I heard a painful yelp. I thought she had fallen down the stairs and bolted out of bed but she was not on the stairs and I heard the flap of the dog door so I went back to bed thinking it was nothing. She soon returned and there was a large clot of bright gel like blood on the outside of her eyeball.

I gave her some tramadol and called the vet and they told me to drop her off, They had not gotten the MRI results yet but would call and see if they could fax them ASAP.

When the vet called me he said the eye had ruptured but sealed itself off right away. He read me the MRI report and the eye specialist was correct it was the zygomatic salivary gland: However the radiologist felt it was a mass and not fluid filled so highly suspicious of cancer of that gland. The only way to know for sure is surgery and a biopsy. Surgery could have good results or everything could get even worse and the results be bad so I had to decide right away about the surgery as the eye was now an emergency of sorts.

Being Jazz is my once in a life time dog the queen of all queens I knew in my gut that this was the end and that It would only be selfish of me to expect her to go through anything else as she was miserable as it was being at the vets without me. I told the vet my decision and went to the vets and took her on the last walk of her life. We walked to a local park then around the neighborhood by the vet. She greeted me tail wagging and was full of kisses for me, even got in one last growl at a dog when we returned to the vets. Then I laid down on the dog bed with her and held her head while she was given the injection and peacefully it was all over. My once in a life time dog left me to go join Dash, my parents and a host of other people and animals she knew here during her spell on earth. Her story so ends and my heart so breaks

My heart feels like someone stomped on it but I do know in my heart that this was the right decision. An interesting thing was Phoenix (who was found in bed with my dad before he was taken to the hospital and later died) came up stairs and was sleeping as close to Jaz as Jazz would allow last night which was not a usual thing for her to do. Maybe in her quiet deaf world she is more attuned to death then the rest of us?? I can't see the key board any more so will end here.

I am so sorry! I have been following this thread and was hoping it wouldn't end this way. You did all you could for your dear girl and I am sure she knew that.
