My Coco has this coughing spell several times a day and nite too, or when she sees someone, she gets excited, & starts off with a cough, then it goes into a a gagging spell like she's got a hair ball or is trying to throw up, but never does. I was told by the vet that it is heart related, either Congestive heart or heart murmer.Either way, it's scarey, and Coco is 12 now and we give her Enalapril & Lomotil. and it don't seem to help at all. I was also told there is no cure.
Is there any one out there that shares this same experience with their pet.? This is a yorkie/schnauzer mix. Thanx Marge

My doggie is very old, 15 yrs. He has this cough.
The vet after doing an exam and blood work couldn't find anything wrong.
He gave me Prednisone 5 mg, to give him 1/8 of a pill daily.
It has taken care of it.

hmmmm hope I am not too late

This hacking/coughing you all speak of, it can be made a lot easier

The dog at our residence has the exact same symptoms

Different diagnosis and treatment

It's either (and probably) allergies or maybe collapsed trachea?

Regardless, my advice to you is to try out a new vet in or around the area, maybe within 30 miles? Our first one didnt really knew what she was doing and kept giving her some kind steroids, which are okay in the short run of they cure, but not long run....they didn't really help either

For some reason I doubt it has to do with the heart, and on top of that you said the mess don't help

However, I've always noticed that giving the doggy a treat or food (in our case lettuce or nuts or really anything [not grapes though, those are poisonous]) also cures her cough instantaneously when she is coughing

If this alone doesn't seem to cut it for you, Cortisone shots cured her completely....temporarily though since she has it bad, but she's doing a lot better

Don't get too many though, they can wear your doggy down and cause hair loss, maybe weaken, so read up on side effects and chances of them before use and consult the meds before use

But it seems to have helped her a lot better

Spread the word and keep peace my people

Later

My almost 2yearold lab was picked up by the local animal control. thankful he was safe and not stolen. unfortunately he was afforded a night stay at the local animal lockup. He has been inside since birth and always slept at the end of the bed. I'm sure the shelters accommodations were quite different than he's used to. I picked him up within 24hours and after bathing and a couple hours pass we noticed his eyes were glaised over and gathering in the corners and a couple days of diariah..as well as a dry almost hoarse cough but not constant. any one help?

My Chihuahua has started having this cough. It used to be just every once in a while but the last 2 days it has been constant. I'm gonna have to take h'm to the vet. I didn't ask the question but thanks everyone for the info.

Default Cocker Spaniel with dry, hacking cough.

My 6 month old Cocker came to me at ten weeks old with what we suspected was kennel cough as she came from a backyard breeder. The vet treated her for such and it didn't clear up. We gave her a second round of antibiotic and then did lung X-rays to ensure it wasn't something more serious. Nothing showed up. She continues to gasp-like cough...then chokes at the very end...and does it mainly whenever she's laid down and woken back up. She was tested for heart worm. Nothing. I'm frustrated as its not going away and I don't know if it ever will. I've read some of these comments and it sounds like it's not that uncommon. Is there anything I should be doing to ease this coughing as my vet didn't seem to think there was anything to treat without finding out if a scope down the dogs throat revealed any obstruction?
