Is this a regional slang word for dog food? People don't call it that where we live.

It always strikes me as strange when I read people referring to dog food as "kibble" on this forum.

I didn't used to refer to it as kibble until I started adding real food to Artie's meal.

So, to differentiate between the dog food (kibble) and the real food (hamburger, veggies) in his bowl, I started saying "kibble" for the dog food.

As in "kibbles and bits" ?- I don't think it is regional or slang at all. Kibble is the form that dog food takes when it is made

I think to differentiate it from canned/wet food....(or whatever else you are feeding)

When I am telling someone I need dog food, I don't say I'm running to the store for some kibble! But when discussing dog food in a forum where there are many different food options, kibble just clarifies what is being discussed....

Because no one wants to feed their dog something called dog food. If it's not good enough for you, it's not good enough for your dog and calling it "dog" food implies it's not fit for human consumption.

Kibble, pellets...I've heard it all!

Oh, I agree! But when I've called it dog food, I've had dog owners go crazy because their Princess doesn't eat dog food!

The way I look at it, if it comes in a bag and is in the shape of pellets, it's safe to call it kibble. Unless you're cooking or feeding raw, your dog is eating dog food, whether you like it or not! I don't care if a bag of kibble is labeled human grade, I won't be reaching in there anytime soon!
