One thing I really love about all animals (and distinctly loathe in people) is that animals only cause pain when necessary to survive- hunt, defend. Only people do it out of desire, and that's something in human nature that is impossible to explain by any rational means.
Of course, many people do have the community care and individual caring that animals often show. I think it's incumbent on everyone to to show this in whatever arena they find themselves, be it people, animals, care for environment, courtesy.
But that causing pain thing... then, as an atheist, I don't have to understand or explain it on any level except to try and stand against it.

What an amazing story...I've had some ferals here and there on my property, and it's not an easy thing to earn a fraction of their trust, let alone have them snuggling up to you like they are with this awesome dog!
