The story is this: I have just a few days ago acquired a Schnauzer. I wasn’t looking for a dog, but it was either I took it on, or she got dumped at a shelter. The condition she was in, was, well to be quite honest, a total mess, ( she looked like a long haired sheep, with matted fur everywhere ). I shampooed her four times, and then conditioned her, then removed a pile of hair about half the size of the dog, ( which I may add, is no easy task ). I have now had her professionally trimmed, or rather, I should say, shaved.

She is a lovely dog, but I don’t know if I will be able to keep her, but since she is now following me everywhere, it seems like she has chosen to be mine, in fact, she is sitting watching me as I write this.

Can anybody tell me how long it would have taken for her to get in that mess?

Do they take a lot of grooming?

They should be groomed about every 4 to 6 weeks. Always brush them out before the bath so that if there are any matts you can get them out, if you bathe with matts then when the fur dries it tightens up the and that can be painful.

You should also be brushing the dog at least every couple of days in between grooming. As far as how long it takes to become matted? Schnauzers can have really fine hair that can matt quickly, it also depends on how matted she was. Without any brushing it usually doesn't take that long.

Mini schnauzer owner here. The most important place to keep her brushes is her gruff (beard). Give her lots of praise for doing well when grooming. About 4 to 8 weeks even to get groomed. I live in Texas and it's $35 for the whole grooming thing.
For her to be in pretty bad shape grooming wise, maybe a year? I've left my dog grow out his hair and it took about 3 months.

Thank you for the advice, especially the bit about brushing her before bathing her, I hadn’t thought of the hair tightening up as being a problem. As for how matted she was, you couldn’t tell where the ears ended and the hair began. She had clumps about half the size of tennis balls all the way from her face, to her rear end, with many on her back.

Again, many thanks.

grooming of schnauzers can be as easy or as difficult as you make it.
if you want to keep her in a show type coat youve got alot more upkeep, hand stripping, clipping, trimming ext and generally its an every 4 weeks kind of job.
keeping her in a puppy or shaved look, as long as your willing to comb her about once a week, will be more like a 6-8 week job.

so with that info, given the state you found her in, id say it took at least a month for her to get in any kind of bad shape but more than likely 3 months minimum for the coat to mat into masses that large and dense. shnauzer hair is wirey and doesnt mat as easily as fine hair...it was specifically bred with that terrier coat to make it easier on the upkeep...due to the kind of job these dogs would be doing....

big kudos for taking her on and giving her a good life.

given she was matted and obviously hasnt had much coat upkeep a little brushing every day with lots of praise and shes probably do well with an omega 3 supliment (1 human capsule, peirce it and squeeze the liquid into some wet food or on bread ect.) terriers tend to get dry skin if not stripped or plucked once a month or so (as they dont shed as freely as normal coated breeds)

Thank you. I will give lots of praise, she seems to be quite a sensitive little creature.
From what you have told me, I donít think the story that I have been told, about her being trimmed and groomed just this Christmas, can be anywhere near true.
Here in the UK, the cost of trimming was £25, probably about the same price.

Thank you again.

Not sure if schnauzers grow hair at different rates, I have a mini. Maybe its different with giant or standard sizes if you have one? Gosh, I just looked at that post I wrote before and I was totally sleep deprived, my writing is awful!
It took about 3 months for my mini to get really scruffy but I continued to brush his hair. Highest concentration of matting is in the tummy and legs, at least for mine.
If you feed her treats while grooming, even better.

I think that I will go with the shaven puppy look, I’m not really into the show thing.
I will have to get hold of some omega 3 supplement, the stuff she has in the margarine, that she has on bread, may already be helping.

Thank you for the good advice.

We all do some sleep deprived writing sometimes, but itís the thought that counts.

Thank you again.
