We lost our lab last December just before Christmas. It made for a rather subdued holiday. Well, I guess now grieving time is over, my wife and kids started lobbying recently for a new dog.
We contacted a local rescue, and Tuesday we went out there to meet some of the candidates. The timing was auspicious. At the same time that we were there meeting new friends, another family was there to drop off their dog. They were moving out of state for work, and for whatever reason they couldn't take him. It worked out very well. It was nice to be able to meet his former family, and he didn't have to spend any time in a foster home.
He is a (more or less) 14 month old greyhound mix. I'd say he is about 80% greyhound and 20% other stuff. He is smaller than a full-on English Greyhound, only about 2-1/2 feet at the shoulder, I'd guess about 35 pounds at most. But he definitely has that greyhound build. Other details are different from greyhounds, like his ears and general shape of his head, but he still is very long, lean, and narrow. He is dark brindle, with two white toes and a small patch of white on his chest. I don't have any pics yet, but I will post some when I get some.
Right now he is having a little bit of separation anxiety, which I consider normal. So last night we took him to the dog park, hoping the activity would help relieve that. He did very well. He socialized well with the other dogs, and seemed to have a great time. Holy cow, is he fast. He easily outpaced any other dog in the park, without really even trying. He doesn't have full confidence yet, and I don't think he even knows how fast he is. I never saw him really dig in to run full tilt boogie, he just loped along in what I would call a jog, but even at that, he was the running king. It was a pleasure to watch him.
I think overall it will be a good fit, and we are glad to welcome him to our family.
greyhounds are so BEAUTIFUL when they are running ... so graceful and elegant whether leisurely or full-tilt boogie.... ha! i love that term... hadn't heard it in ages.....
i'm sure he will be settling in with his new family very quickly.....
Thanks to all. His name is Tiberius -- the family wondered why he didn't always respond well to his name, lol. We will be working on shortening that. Probably end up calling him Tye or Tibby or some such variant. I think 4 syllables is too long for a dog's name. I promise to post pics soon.
