Default Need some quick help

Well, my cocker spaniel is about 13 years old and she has been just diagnosed with cushings. I'm a mess right now, because the option to put her down or start her on treatment is now. I've decided to make a decision by Monday. They say the medicine is real hard on them and is almost like doing chemo. I love my baby so much and she seems like she has so much life left in her. It just seems to early, but I don't want her to suffer and she is crying all throughout the night. The doc said realistically sometimes they might get 4-6 months and sometimes might not get better. Of course, she said there is no wrong decision. However, I don't want to let her go... My mom doesn't want her to go through chemo treatment or anything. She cries all night, I thought it was anxiety, because Ill take her to another room and shell be ok for awhile... She drinks nothing but a ton of water, but still eats too and is inconstinate. Will meds work good enough, considering she still seems like shes got a lot of life left? Or is that selfish? I don't want her to suffer... Why must this be a decision. Im sorry..

Oh.......your baby is adorable. I feel horrible about her diagnosis. I have also had to deal with bad news and it just rips you to pieces.

I googled Cushings Disease in dogs and here is one of the articles I read. It has a story of a dog who is doing OK on the medicine route after 2 years. There are a lot of variables with this disease for sure.

Pet Owner's Crash Course in Canine Cushing's Disease

Just from what I have read here, I would be inclined to seek treatment and see how it goes before I would give up.

If I were you, I would be reading everything I could find on the net.......and taking notes........to discuss with my vet. I would even consider getting other opinions from another vet before I gave up. I would ask my vet if there is a specialist you could consult with. This is what I would be doing before I made a decision.

My heart aches for you, because I have been where you are too many times and I know exactly what you are going through. It is so wonderful to have pets, until the end time is near and you have to struggle with these decisions.

Please, do the research before you make up your mind......and know that I will be sending good thoughts your way. All of the animals lovers here on CD will be pulling for you and your little girl.

I hope someone who has had to deal with Cushings with their dog will post here soon and give you some first hand insight that I am unable to give you.

I found another thread here on CD about Cushings.

You could direct message a poster and ask them for help and info directly.

Hi there, sent you a message, has the vet ruled out diabetes? They will ask you that at the link I sent you.

Take care

I don't have any experience of this illness, nor can I offer advice as to what you should do. I know what I would do, given her age and the long term prognosis. However you need to make the right decision for you and your dog.

Sending positive vibes and hugs.

It's such a hard decision, you wouldn't want to give her medicine that makes her miserable if it only gives her a few months, but it might be worth it if there's a good chance she could get much more time than that. You could always start treatments, and if you feel it's too much for her, stop them again. Hope you'll be able to find the best thing for her, whatever it is.
