I refuse to give my dogs treats anymore it is just too much and they have lost weight and my vet says they are much healthier without all that garbage that people tend to give them .

I don't buy any commercial dog food or dog treats. There are simply too many recalls and it seems to be constantly.

Commercial cereal made for humans makes a good dog treat. Get the sugar free kind. Dogs will work for a tiny treat, as small as a cheerio and they will be happy about it.

I make dried beef, salt free jerky, as a high value treat. Cheese or chicken or beef heart is a high value treat.

I don't treat like an indulgent parent handing out candy. My dogs work for their treats, but I train multiple times a day, often for less than a minute per session. So my dogs might get several treats in a day. But the treats are tiny and do not affect the dog's weight. I regulate weight by adjusting the amount of food that goes into their supper dish. Dogs are much healthier when they are slim.

Adding this: I keep an eye out and buy what is cheap. I have a Grocery Outlet near me and I cruise the cereal aisle when I am low on treats. Close dated cereal can be really inexpensive. The pieces are small, it is vitamin enriched, and there are plenty of options that don't contain sugar. It's made for human children, in the USA, so much less chance of a recall.

Right now, the dogs are working for little tiny pretzels, about the size of my thumb nail.

Pensive fetches two supper dishes and places them in my hand and then she does either a sit or a down, and all of that for one tiny pretzel.

Wyatt McRiot has discovered that he can hang out and allow Pensive to fetch his supper dish and he doesn't do the work and he still gets a pretzel.
