Has anyone had problems with constant barking? My childhood dachshund was constantly yapping. Although it's the perfect sized dog for me, I'd be afraid to get one if it was going to be a barker.
hmmmm....other than eating, barking is the dachshunds favorite pasttime
Mine don't bark "constantly" but they do enjoy it. And my standard sounds like a rottweiler, just hearing him you would never think it was such a small dog!
They were bred as earth dogs, which means that they would tunnel into the burrows of foxes and badgers. then bark, then the hunters would hear the sound underground and dig into the badgers lairs. They have a bark that sounds like they are larger than they are behind a closed door. Good apartment dogs. Although you may have to train for "enough is enough" barking.
Although I have never seen one that barks incessantly - like some toy dogs I have known.
Like everyone says - they do tend to bark more than say a big dog like a lab..., but it is a trainable issue. I have used a squirt/spray bottle of water to accomplish the "enough is enough" task. I never have to squirt anymore as he hushes at the sight of the bottle. Another dachshund quirk is they apparently don't like a wet face!
I've been looking at getting a Dachshund, how ever I'm not real pleased with most of the breeders. If I could get my hands on a european bred one where they do a wonderful job of correct breeding, I'd get one in a heart beat.
They are still used for hunting over there and now in the US they are starting to use them for "blood tracking" wounded Deer.
They are not for everyone, that's for sure but they are still used for hunting here ...check out the field trialing they do!
Did you check the listings at the Dachshund Club? That's how I found mine, she was in Northern NJ. She only breeds smooth standards - I would recommend her if that's the type you want & you wanted to get one from that distance away (not too bad from GA). My boy is perfect
Or...try rescue I have seen some GORGEOUS purebred perfectly conformed dachsies in rescue.

Oh no, they don't like a wet face at all The squirt bottle works really well, I also have them trained to stop "whatever" with a loud hand clap and a "no", "off" or whatever. They don't pay as much attention unless I use the hand clap
I am picking up my friend and her new baby, Sally, a short-haired, white with brown spots, at the airport tomorrow. She hasn't had a pet in decades, but lost her husband last year and we've all been after her to get a 4-legged companion.
Her son & DIL have 4 dachshunds, so she's used to being around the breed when she visits and I'm sure she'll be calling them with issues. But any advice helps & this thread is great.
Not me personally, but my parents do. Their first one, Bucky, was a miniature wire haired. He's passed, but he was great. Absolutely disgusting when he would come back to the front porch with frogs legs hanging out of his mouth. ICK!! LOL. Now they have Buddy and Coco, they're short haired-one is dark brown and the other is a coco color. They are absolutely adorable. Cracks me up seeing my big biker guy of a father walk in and pick one of these dogs up, kiss it on it's snout and baby talk it. LOL. I can't wait to have a Dachshund one day. I can't stand little dogs, but I love that a Dachshund thinks it's a rottweiller. LOL. They have the best big dog attitude of any little dog I've seen. And they are just so sweet. Can't wait.
Big dog in a little package. Not wimpy at all. Big barks - so behind a door they sound bigger than they are. Fearless. They are bred as hunters (mine were great moussers) and you will see that come through in their personality. Persevering (obsessive?) Stubborn - which means they can be hard to train with conventional methods. Great merry personalities though - they definitely have a sense of humor. Our favorite breed.

So true. When I dog sat my parents' wirehaired, a friend who is afraid of dogs came over and refused to come in when he heard the bark. LOL. I held up the already aged Bucky and said, "THIS is the dog you're afraid of." He couldn't believe that bark came out of something so little.
