Default Barking dog.

My neighbor owns two large dogs that bark constantly when he is not home. What options are available to me. Copmplaints to him do no good.

Call your municiplaity to see what laws apply to barking dogs. If there are noise laws, find out if its the police or animal control that follows up. Call the agency responsible for it and complain.

I had that problem (nighttime barking outside my BR window), and talking to them did no good. I had to sic the county on them, and that involved a whole process and protocol of its own. Every area differs.

Default Barking Dog

We have been through this. In order:

1. Knocked on the neighbor door and politely asked them to bring their barking dog inside as it was disturbing us during the day and through the night. He replied, "It's a dog and dogs do bark". Wow!

2. Next occurence we called the police and they ticketed the neighbor for peace disturbance. The dog needs to be barking for the police to actually ticket.

3. The barking dog owners actually tried to fight the ticket and we had to go to court. The judge reprimanded them and they had to pay a steep fine.

4. Dog stopped barking.

Animal control in our area did nothing to help.

We love animals and it's the owners we fault not the barking dog. They had one of those doggie doors and allowed the dog to roam the yard and bark at anything that moved. Door is now shut and dog is silent 99% of the time.

Good Luck!

All good advice...just be prepared for possible retaliation, physical and otherwise.

Our back neighbors have a huge Great Dane named Scooby who barked at everything. He is such a sweet dog but he's easily scared by any remote sound, and he used to bark a lot.

One night in particular, last February, was freezing outside and he had been barking from 8pm until 1am. Poor dog just wanted to be let in but I don't think his owners really cared. I had it and called the police on them. Sure enough one of the officers - I saw him turn down their street - made them quiet the dog down.

I thought that would stop it, but instead they just didn't care more. Great Danes have extremely loud barks, very vocal and deep. His bark would echo across all the houses in our neighborhood. They'd let him out around 5am and that would start it.

I went to a few neighbors and they agreed that it was ridiculous. We all wrote a collective letter to the people who let their Scooby bark like mad. It was friendly enough, but firm and to the point that we really didn't like it. We mentioned that if it continued we would notify the authorities.

That letter was mailed by one of our neighbors to their house in early March. Nowadays, Scooby only barks once to be let in and he is promptly allowed in. Sometimes you forget they even HAVE a dog.

Best of luck! Our dog only barks when he wants to be let in, he knows not to bark at random objects like leaves or even squirrels in the trees. LOL!

Had similar neighbors and could have cared less, even knowing they were keeping my baby up crying. I was told by the Animal Nuisance Dept that you would have a stronger case if you had signatures from neighbors experiencing the same thing and would like it stopped. If there are more than one in your neighborhood, you could have an entire chorus barking together!
