How do you feel about this?

Sergeant Ian Craven in 'suicide bid' after police dogs die of heat in his car | Mail Online

I know that you could say that they are not pets, but I value working Dogs equally to pets.

How could you say they are not pets? Police dogs live with their handlers and spend hours and hours training and working together every day. The bond that they have is every bit as profound, if not moreso, than the bond between a human and a pure companion dog.

It sounds like this guy may have some pretty serious issues.

He definitely has serious issues, he’s done it before, and been promoted despite doing so.

I wasn’t saying that they weren’t pets, but expected someone else to say so. I had to cover my reasons for putting this in the pets section.

I am not an officer myself, but I have witnessed the operations of the K-9 unit for the Springfield Police Department here in Oregon (considered the best in the state) on several occasions as well as spending time with some of the officers, and I can say the relationships the officers have with each of their individual dogs is extremely intense. An officer usually has the same dog from beginning to end, and they go home at night with the officer as part of their family. Each dog responds uniquely to their respective handler. If anything, they have a much closer a bond than a regular dog would have with an ordinary family.

Idiot. The man should have never been trusted with dogs again after the first incident..instead they promote him..typical...

I say fire him, and charge him with death of a police officer. After all, criminals who attack police dogs are charged with assault on an officer.

This same thing happened a few years ago in Salt Lake City as well. And no discipline action for the officer involved...

The same thing happened in Lake City, FL last year and I was there at the time. This article says he was distracted by a personal matter ... suspended for 15 days and will no longer be a K9 handler. I met someone who was a friend of the deputy. He said what happened was the deputy stopped by his home, went inside and took some medication, sat down for a moment and fell asleep. Taking meds that cause drowsiness while on duty is a puzzler. But same man said this deputy trained all of the K9's and had made a second mortgage on his home to build special dog houses that were air conditioned and had three others at his home when this happened. He was devastated by the K9's death and by causing it. As other posters mentioned, the dogs are raised and kept as family members.

we had a case here, here the cars are equipt to continue running without keys in the k9 units to keep the air going for the dogs so that officers can exit their vehicles without worry of the dogs...
but the back up cut out and the dog died, the officer was only away from his car for 15 minutes...
it wasnt even overly hot out, only about 78 degrees that day.

it doesnt take long...
such a shame.
its one of the resons i get sooo upset when i see dogs left in cars with the window cracked a little...people dont realize that even in low temps in the shade, cars turn into ovens pretty dang quickly!

They definitely are family to the police officers. Met a handler and his pure black GSD at Waffle House once! Such a sweetie-- the handler and dog.

Over 6 hours, though? How can you forget a dog for over 6 hours? He deserves to be punished and never able to be a handler again.
