I've been looking at mini golden doodles for a few months now, and what I've found is that they range in price from about $1,600 to $2,500 dollars, so his price is about what the other breeders are charging. He was asking $2,400 for the 6 week old that my son and I liked best.

He did not offer to let us see any paperwork on the dogs, nor did he offer to let us see the parents which should be a male mini poodle and a female golden. He offered us a list of "satisfied customers" from around the country, but the list has not been updated since his wife passed a few years ago, so there is nothing current.

To OP you've run across a puppy miller and I hope you will not do business with them. They are mutts, there is no "papers" for these dogs and these types of breeders don't do health clearances and bloodline research.

You can get a wonderful poodle through a reputable breeder, that has had health clearences etc.

You also might check with a poodle or schnauzer rescue group, they might have something that would fit your needs.

There are plenty of "doodles" in rescues...don't buy one.

As far as it being the only dog with parasites... you gotta wonder if it's got other issues as they will prey on a dog with a week immune system. Please call the authorities.. rural or not these are not humane conditions and the county will have some sort of control. If he was on vacation then he obviously does not have good help that cares for these dogs when he is gone either. My puppymill rescue was originally sold at a pet shop for $1100 and she's supposedly a purebred. This means her puppy mill ( which was in OK) sold her for less than that including shipping to CA. She had so many issues the person that got her at the petstore surrendered her to rescue. She has papers and wasnt close to the $2000 he's asking for a non- AKC recognized "breed" ( aka designer mutt)
This is exactly what I told my husband.

Agreed about calling the authorities. Regardless of the rural location, Animal Care and Control will have jurisdiction, although I am not sure how much they can do if the laws in OK allow this sort of thing. But just imagine if they don't? You could single-handedly shut this guy down and save a lot of puppies from misery.

I also think that it's a great idea to offer him a really low amount for the dog, which I also think that he will take.

I don't know much about the laws here in OK as far as breeders go, but I do know there has been much talk about a new law in the state legislature which many breeders, even reputable ones, are afraid will put them out of business.

This guy lives over 2 hours away, in another part of the state, so waiting and seeing if they eventually end up in the local shelter is not possible.

This old man is definitely all about the money. Even for this 6 month old dog, he wants $2,000!!! He never told us how much any of the puppies were, until he figured out which ones we liked the most, then amazingly they became the most desirable puppies in the litter, and therefore the most expensive. He tried to discourage us from coming to look at them at all. He just wanted to pick a dog for us, and him ship it to us. Um, no, you are not picking out my dog for me.

Apparently he and his wife had been breeders for many years of goldens and labs, then about 10 years ago, they got into the golden doodle business. From what he said, it sounds like his wife was the "dog person" and she passed away a couple of years ago. He told us, "I don't bond with these dogs". They are not allowed in his house. He actually made us sit outside in 105 degree heat to look at the dogs. If I'm going to buy a dog I want to get it from someone who loves them, and is genuinely sad to see them leave, like the last dog we had. The lady we bought her from called several times to make sure she was doing well, and that we were taking proper care of her.
Wow, that's more than I paid in donations for my 5 dogs combined - all rescues, 2 pure bred lab puppies and one pure bred (old-timer) golden retriever. The others are a chocolate lab/spaniel mix and a black lab that may have just a little great dane in him. Both of the 'mutts' were rescued from rural shelters where they didn't stand much of a chance of finding a good home.

I agree with many of the other posters. Do not do business with this guy or any backyard breeder for that matter. I'm sure you have your heart set on a golden-doodle but I'd ask that you at least look at rescue organizations or shelters. You may not have much luck finding a golden-doodle in a shelter or a rescue but you may just find the most grateful dog in the world that will be a faithful, loving companion.

Rescuing dogs vs. buying from a breeder was the best decision we ever made.

Well it's way more than we've ever paid for a dog too. Our other 2 dogs have both been schnauzers and while they were cheap to buy, the medical costs were astronomical, especially with the last one. For the last 7 years of her life, we spent $100 a month just for one medication she had to take. She had to have several surgeries, and we were at the vet all the time. Last year, after having to see a specialist vet for an infected joint, DH did the math, and calculated that we had spent well over $14,000 on this dog. But, she was a dearly loved family member, and did whatever it took to keep her happy and feeling well, until her body just began to shut down, and we could not make her comfortable any longer. The one we had before her was not much better.

I do think rescuing a dog is a great idea, however, both of our sons have allergy issues, so we have to be very careful with they type of dogs they can be around. And while I am not allergic to dog dander as my kids are, dog hair sends my nose into an itching frenzy. I cannot have a dog that sheds in the house. It just will not work for us to have just any kind of dog, so that really limits the kind of dog we could adopt from a shelter.

After a lot of research, there are several breeds we are looking at, but golden doodles really caught our attention, because they tend to be hypoallergenic, don't normally shed and are typically very healthy dogs, and besides, they are incredibly cute too.

DH actually called our vet yesterday and discussed this puppy with him. His advice was to proceed slowly and with caution and if we decide to buy this little guy, we should not take him unless the breeder will sign something saying that if, after a few weeks, the dog is not working out, he will give our money back.

I really think DH has about talked himself out of the puppy.

Hideous. I suggest going to some dog shows, and talking to legitimate dog breeders. If you are going to spend that much on a dog, get one from a real breeder.

That dog you described has bad karma, you are not responsible for saving him. Get the dog you want. If you feel like trying him out...offer the guy $250, he will probably take it...and maybe this dog can be rehabilitated.

I can't offer any advice on hypoallergenic dogs - my labs and golden don't quite qualify!! Best of luck in your search.
