When I was cleaning out my filing cabinet, I found my labrador's AKC registration paperwork and my beagle basset's adoption paperwork.

My lab is 14 turning 15 after the new year. My beagle basset might be 8 turning 9 after the new year.

The beagle basset might even be older than that since we don't know his age when we adopted him.

The 8 turning 9 is based on if he was 11 or 12 months old at adoption. He could be older.

I thought my lab was 16. Worse than that, I thought my beagle basset was 3 years old!

How can I own a dog for 8 years and think he has only been living here for 3 years?!?!?

I'm a terrible mother!

Memory is selective not to mention our brains are usually very busy. That's why we keep records.

I'm a worse Mom in the memory dept. regarding my skin kid.........as far as I am concerned he is 20, not 36 years old. Also, he's never given me a stitch of trouble.

My fur kids, however, I do know their real ages based on adoption estimates and AKC papers that came with one owner surrender........

But, hey, do you feed and vet them??? Then you are a great mom!

I must be a real bad mom, the only way I can remember the age of my older cat is by checking the date of our cruise to the Bahamas. That's all I remember about when we got her - she was 3 months old and we delayed because of our cruise. The little guy who adopted us last summer will be easy. We know when we got him to the vet he was either 1 or 2 months old - vet said 1 month but he weighed almost 2 pounds, so we compromised and decided his birthday was July 4th.

And my sons' birthdays - whew - I have to calculate how old they are all the time - now I just say one is over 40 and the other 4 years younger - lol.

Your not a bad mom, heck sometimes I can not even remember my own age! I think we have all noticed that the older one gets the faster time seems to pass. Dazzle just turned 3 on Saturday but it seems like only a few weeks ago that My friend and I went to pick him up and Little Chaos is now 6 months...times goes much too fast! Based on your labs age I would say you are agreat mom!

Dear Hopes,

Do you care for your dogs, give them lots of love and attention, give them good quality food and clean, fresh water, take them to the vet, take walks with them, play with them?

Thus, in my book, you are a great mom!

not to worry... the only way i could keep track of charley and max's age was to remember that I bought my house in november, 2004 and i brought them home within a week of that.... max was 3 months and charley was 4-1/2 months old.....

bailey's age i remember the same way, except i have to move forward, because she was born in february, 2005.... not sure of the exact date, so gave her my dad's b-day of 02/01

now dave.... he is the only one of all of them that i know the exact date of birth.... he and his momma and 7 siblings were turned over to the shelter when the babies were 1-day old..... but i still have to stop and think about the year..... he will be 3 this coming november 2....

That's how my father kept track!

My sisters and I were all born 9 months after he was transferred to new cities! Guess mom and dad were always christening the new houses.
