I always laugh when people think it is the cost of getting an animal that is the most expensive part of it as many years ago as I was starting out I was visiting my parents and had stopped at the business they owned. outside I found a very small kitten with big blue eyes.People tended to dump cats among the industrial buildings where the business was and frequently there were kittens born in the bushes. I scooped up the kitty and carried it inside . I decided a kitty would be nice but needed to check with my then landloard as some people in the apartments had cats so my dad said the kitten could stay at his business for the time being.Got home landloard said no so I told my parents then my dad decided the kitten was pretty cute so took it home where there were 3 dogs and two old adult cats. His cute new FREE Kitten.......well turns out Free Kitten was very sick and the older cats all caught it and it was a fight saving everyones life ( which they did ) and it costs thousands so the free Kitty became the most expensive kitty my parents ever owned!

Nothing in life is without costs and pets can be very expensive!

Very well said. I also advise against Craigs list for a very general reason. Craig's list and the internet are huge for pet scams right now. Basic scam will be that the dog/cat is "free" but there is some sort of licensing/shipping/ or other fee involved. A lot of these ads are placed by people that aren't even in the country. Please be very careful if you decide to "adopt" an animal off of a public list. Watch out for scams!

Consider why so many dogs are in shelters. have you ever been to a shelter to see homeless dogs?

I have taken several dogs to obedience classes and it is always the dalmations who drop out or are kicked out for disrupting the class.
My mom personally doesn't like them but she won't mind

just ran across your thread in another forum where you were seeking advice about dealing with a difficult family member.... and fwiw, i really think you should wait until you are able to support yourself before you take responsibility for another living being.... you are on your way, what with school and part time work.... i just think you should be patient until you get better on your feet..... .... heck, i was 45 years old before i got my first dog.... always had cats before that.....
