i dont like electric fences for primary use simply because ive seen way too many dogs, big and small run rght through them even on the higest setting...

in terms of health though, if your collar setting is right (not too high) and your dog isnt testing the fence on a regular basis i cant see a physical healht problem occuring...
mental health one can never be so sure, i know i personally wouldnt want to be zapped on a regular basis and like i said ive known many dogs run straight through them then refuse to come home)

but phsical health i dont belive they cause any issues assuming the setting it not too high.

ive used electric fence (hot wire) in farming situations as a back up fence, and a zap from one HURTS alot...however unless the setting is high enough to burn, theres no lasting health concerns..ive been zapped my fair share lol.

when in doubt i tell people, put the collar on yourself at the setting you have it set for the dog then go cross that line and see what happens...
if you still feel comfortbale using it once you KNOW what it feels like to wear it then by all means go for it...but id suggest reminding yourself once in a while...

The fence keeps the dog in but does not keep other dogs or people or animals out.
Just do consider.

Some things to consider, with electronic collars if there is another device close by, that trips the collar you could come home to a strung out, insane dog. (Not good.) It has happened.

Also keep in mind you have a high pain tolerance dog. It is a bulldog, bred to grab a bull by the nose and hold on to the death. It was bred to ignore pain.

You could have the collar on the lower level, it could deliver a shock and that shock could disrupt his/her heart.

There are many things to consider. It may or may not be the right fence for your dog.

I wouldn't use one, because there are raccoons and coyotes and even a red fox in my neighborhood. I also think my dogs would run and take the hit if they saw a squirrel or cat.

NO electric fence will contain any dog with a high prey drive! NONE.

If you love your dog then protect it. Install a secure fence such as a wooden privacy fence or a 6' chain link with a hog ring to keep it from digging out or jumping over it.

NO electric fence, NONE, really? I whole-heartedly disagree.

I have 4 dogs that are trained on an invisible fence. We have a 35 acre property and the invisible fence is around the entire property. 2 of my dogs have a very high prey drive. My chocolate lab/spaniel mix and black lab spend hours outside digging and bringing back birds, prairie dogs, mice, voles, etc. My choc lab has climbed trees after squirrels. I would classify them as having a high prey drive.

Neither has breached the invisible fence. I have watched them chase birds and rabbits to the property line and either stop in their tracks or veer off and run parellel to the property. There are horses that are visible from our yard and they sit and watch them but have never attempted to move outside the property.

My black lab that died last year was tennis ball crazy...he followed a tennis ball off a 75 ft cliff into a river (long story, but of course, I followed him over. thankfully we were both ok.) I could throw a tennis ball that would go outside the invisible fence line and he would run to it, stop and look back and bark.

I'd love to know your experience with the invisible/electric fence is. That is, if you actually have any.

To answer the OPs question...

I've never heard of any health issues, I've never seen any other device close by affect our system.

A couple of words of advice:
you have to be very strict in the initial training.
Make sure that the collar is fitting correctly and that the level of 'correction' is right for the size/weight of your dog
You also need to remove the collar when not in use. Even if it is only at night.

ive known primarily of jack russels locally that have run rught through "big dog" systems...set highest level too...

labs have drive, but its nothing compared to the drive and pain tolerance of a terrier breed, especially bully breeds which all have terrier blood.

And I have a Weim that goes outside on a steel chain because he walks through the eletric fence.

Also worth noting is that in the event of a power failure the electric fence does not work unless you have a secondary diesel generator hooked up to it.

Location is everything. There is a big difference between 3/4 acre on federal highway and 40 acres in the county. If the parcel of land is 40 acres square, it is more than 8300 feet on each side. Even a dog with a high prey drive is not likely to leave that kind of acreage..
