Default Pit bulls....

Woman seriously hurt in dog attack

I could use a little help on this one.

I am not a strong enough poster and some of these people are way out of line.

~35 people die in this country each year as a result of dog-bites.

~35,000 people die in this country each year as a result of automobile accidents.

Why do we scream about the 35 and not about the 35,000???

And how many dogs (pit bulls especially) are abused, neglected, fought and euthanized at tax payer expense....? I'm thinking in the millions per year.
Honestly it's a wonder they don't bite people more often.

Driller, I've been involved in way too many of these sorts of discussions and don't think I've ever seen anyone change their views one iota. It's frustrating, but then I guess it is OK that people don't share my opinions or like my dogs. I'm OK with that....

I did jump in and I'm glad to say so far more people are sticking up for pit bulls than not. Not just regular dog forum posters, either.

The breed is misunderstood and there are too many breeds that one would not like their neighbor to have... oddly, it is okay for the naysayer in many of these cases but not okay for their neighbor - whatever.

We have a pit-mix rescue. She is a loving and loyal family member. BUT we do realize that regardless of any training, she will absolutely attack and harm anyone that enters our property. There aren't any professional trainers where we live so I have relied a LOT on this board and the internet in general. We had to recently succumb to leashing her when letting her out due to her attacks on the pets next door and one attack on a human (in that case, the only threat he posed was carrying a weed whacker).

ALL dogs come with responsibility AND liability.

I want to just throw up my arms sometimes and say: Ban everything and regulate the hell out of everything else so nobody gets to enjoy anything.

Can't we just all enjoy common sense and decency toward all living beings? Oh well... enough ranting for today but in my defense, it has been awhile since I've ranted.

Last edited by SunsetBeachFL; 09-30-2011 at 01:35 PM.. Reason: To add: I didn't want to rescue her because of the breed and no experience with the breed or a mix. Boy, was I wrong!

I don't really try because I know it will have no impact. People only change their minds if/when they want to.

The politics forum in general reminds me of this quote (which a friend has hanging on a plaque in her kitchen -- I don't know who originated this quote):
"Never argue with an idiot. He'll drag you down to his level and then beat you with experience."
Truer words were never spoken!!

First it's posted in POC and rational discussion is not the reason that forum exist, so in time it will turn into a Pittbull euqals liberal democrates who wants to tax everyone, or a Tea party war against illegals by arming them with pittbulls. ......

As for the whole issue and pittiyphobia, its like anything where emotions are attached, rational discussion will never exist. It will be ammunition to fan the flames of pittyphobia, and it will be ammunition for the Pitts are God's dog group as well.

Until this can be discussed rationally and all sides postion understiood and addresses, it's just pissing into the wind.

This story is on Mlive today:

Saginaw firefighters extinguish house fire, reunite 6-month-old pit bull puppy with owner | MLive.com

And once again, comments are very polarized (I'm not a commenter there.) Earlier this year Saginaw was mulling over and tweaking a breed-specific ordinance/ban of pit bulls and several other breeds, and I did get involved with some of the commentary. But really it was pointless. It's like an abortion debate - virtually everyone has their mind made up and very few people are going to change their minds, at least on the basis of what people say in a forum.

As PF says - people are mainly arguing emotionally, not rationally (on both sides, I have to say) so I stay away from these debates any more.
