I have to agree with EVERYONE that has posted so far...

I will give it to you from another view. (IMHO)

Let me say this just as gently as I can...I'd rather apologize to my new dog for leaving him a week at a doggy day care, kennel or with a pet sitter, family member or friend THAN to tell my son when we get back from vacation he can have a dog...BUT the ONE he REALLY wants and FITS our family is gone because I waited. I dropped the ball, yes...I had the opportunity to adopted THE ONE...but no, I thought it would be too difficult on that good ole dog to "handle" being kenneled after being in a shelter (well we don't know how long)...

Is this making any sense?

I think you will make the right choice for not only your son but for the perfect dog for your family.

My last adoption (back in July) picked me. He could not have been a more perfect fit for our family. However, once the the ball started rolling, there was no way I was going to give someone else to opportunity to adopt him. Funny, I can't image life without him now, nor would I want too! (Btw, someone else put in an application that day for him...)

Waiting would be the wrong thing to do...for so many reasons.

Please do not hesitate on this matter.

Again, you asked. I answered. (IMHO)

I drive rescue transports of dogs where they are getting handed off from one driver to the next, generally spending just an hour or so with each person. Sometimes I also overnight them and the journey continues for another whole day. They may be with 15 to 20 different folks over that time.

At the end they virtually all settle in to their new homes within a day or so and "get it". I would not worry at all that the dog may suffer long term confusion or fear. The no kill shelter that you are getting him from most likely gets most of its dogs and cats from high kill shelters in the area so you will be helping an additional dog as you open up a space.

Don't let the perfect companion get away. Adopt him now. Please.

This is what I was thinking too. His birthday is two days before we leave on our trip. I know that if we tell him on that day that he can get a dog when we get back, he'll be thinking about that dog all week. I will feel so horrible if the dog is gone by then.

I think I'll talk to DH again and start the process. Thanks again everyone!

What about boarding him at your vets? And IF he/she needs spay/nutered they can do it while your gone & get his shots up to date. Perhaps a good grooming!
