You are confusing them w/ Newfoundlands. Berners are a 'dry-mouthed' breed, although the physical size of the flews will dictate exactly how dry.

Wet-mouthed breeds are breed for rescue work. The drool is a critical component to their olfactory systems and aids in the detection of airborne pheromones. Berners were breed for all-purpose farm work, including drafting, but not for rescue work like Saints, Newfs, Bloodhounds and similar breeds.

Newfoundlands:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newfoundland_(dog)

Post WWII one Newf was bred to a BMD so there is a very small genetic similarity.

"Today, December 21, marks the 63rd birthday of one of the most
illustrious characters in the long and distinguished history of
Bernerdom: Babette v. Schwarzwasserbachli, a wonderful Yuletide
gift in 1948 whose heritage can inspire us today.

Babette's unique role in the chronicles of Bernerdom is tied to
her status as a Berner heritage dog of the mixed persuasion.
Taking fate boldly into their own paws, as told by the records of
the Swiss Berner Sennenhund Club, the noble Christine v. Lux and
the distinguished Newfoundland Pluto v. Erlengut sometime in
October of 1948 joined together in a most happy and fruitful
alliance bringing forth in due time Babette, bearing the
outstanding virtues of both breeds."

I have been to National Specialties and many shows and have never seen BMDs or their owners w/ towels. Newfs — yeah definitely, but hey... if you say so, I believe you. Possibly because they were working on a hot day?

Beautiful dogs, Zoyd! Are they yours?

I'm guessing they're not allowed to sleep with you because there'd be NO WAY for everyone to fit on the bed!

Thanks, Hopes.

The first girl is. You may see her around Asheville from time to time.

The second is a friend (a very ill friend) who bred the dogs in the photo.

The third is another friend's boy who died under strange circumstances at a vet's office. He is pulling a cart and has a fancy harness on — which is the green thing you see around his neck.
