A crib mattress is a great idea. We have an old Lab too...tile floors, so I'm thinking this will be her next bed. A crib sheet in the summer will keep it cool and a fleece or flannel sheet in the winter...warm and cozy. Petsmart has a big dog bed too...about the size of a crib mattress but lots more money.
I have had good luck with a couple of memory foam beds. They're about 3 or 4" thick and do retain their shape. I think I bought them at Walmart...about $35/40.
Katie sleeps on Foam I paid $10 at Ollies 4 yrs ago! 4 inches thick! I put flannel sheet around it! BTW since getting LadyBug I wrap it in plastic wrap 1st!
Crib mattress and memory foam are good choices. I've used both. I also use currently one of those orthopaedic foam beds, which is basically foam shaped like egg crates.
We have 4 labs and our yellow is getting older, he's going on 9. We bought a really nice memory foam bed from Orvis last year or so. It was expensive but it has held up nicely with 4 dogs using it.
Now, if I could only find a good mattress for my old bones!
I have a couple of Cesar Milans orthopedic dog beds, they are wonderful and the dogs
looove them, about $50 for a large dog.
