Uhm, release of the fluid or liquid contained in these glands/sacs. In the instances mentioned in above posts, likely involuntary and brought on by stress. The smell is uhm...bad. Often times the smell is horrible.

Rip is a VERY high energy dog. And a brat......

I took Rip and Ape in the vet's office at the same time. (never again)

We had just got Ape to be dominant over Rip.

So, in the small room with Ape, Rip let go of the AWFULL smell.

It was his way of protecting himself.

Dogs can definitely get stressed and it can affect their health. My brother moved last year and his Doberman, who had never had a health issue before, started getting really bad diarrhea. My brother was feeding him grocery store food but it had never bothered him before. But after the move, poor Sadie couldn’t digest it anymore. I got him to start feeding her a Natural Balance formula with prebiotics for her tummy called Alpha, and luckily that cleared everything up. But I’m positive the whole issue began from stress.
