My pleasure! A friend of mine posted it on Facebook weeks ago. It has stuck with me all this time, so I went back to his page to find it, copy it, and paste it here. I'm glad that you're passing it along further.
Thank you for posting. I wish every pet owner could/would read this. We all need this reminder, no matter how good we are with our pets. My 2 pups are young and I'm not, so I have to always tell myself that its about them, not me. I play when I'd rather nap, or cuddle when I'd rather read a book, but I owe them big time! Now talking to them isnt a problem. They know so many words I have to spell a lot of them.
1. My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any separation from you will be painful: remember that before you get me.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3. Place your trust in me- it is crucial to my well being.
4. Do not be angry at me for long, and do not lock me up as punishment.
5. You have your work, your entertainment, and your friends. I only have you.
6. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don't understand your words, I understand your voice when it is speaking to me.
7. Be aware that how ever you treat me, I will never forget.
8. Remember before you hit me that I have teeth that could easily hurt you, but I choose not to bite you because I love you.
9. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate,or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I might not be getting the right food, or I have been out too long, or my heart is getting too old and weak.
10. Take care of me when I get old; you too will grow old. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say: "I cannot bear to watch" or "Let it happen in my absence." Everything is easier for me if you are there, even my death. Remember that I love you.
Number 10 got me. Too close to home I guess.
Thank you for posting this though. These are important points that every dog owner should remember

I know, Cat.
Actually, I think it was around *that* time when my friend posted it on his FB page. I think that's probably why I didn't share it on mine -- I didn't want you to see it then.
He owns the copyright. He does not mind republication, but he does request credit and a link to his site.
Unfortunately, the vast majority of people who are reposting are not doing that.
I had no idea. Thank you for clarifying that. Mr. Rawlinson definitely deserves all the credit.
