So, I took Artie to the groomer to get his nails cut today. Unfortunately, one of the girls was out sick and so I had to help. This is how it went:

1. I had to coerce (via sweet-talking) and wrestle him into "letting" me put a muzzle on him. The muzzle is absolutely necessary. So is the wrestling.

2. The three of us -- and keep in mind that Artie's just 35 pounds -- had to work to get him from the lobby into the "procedure room." When Artie puts his brakes on, they're ON.

3. One of the girls lifted my squirming boy onto the table, and the other girl got his collar clipped to the do-hickey that "holds him in place" (keep reading to see how good that is!), and got the other collar around him.

4. One girl and I held him while the other girl clipped his nails. Four or five times, Artie almost flew off the table via his own strength and squirming, even though TWO of us were holding him. (One of us -- me -- was kissing his forehead, telling him what a good boy he is.)

5. While he was there, I figured... let's express his anal sacs since he'd been doing the bum scootch. Again, he almost set himself free three times. HE HATES HAVING HIS BUM TOUCHED. It took two of us to hold him UPRIGHT -- he kept sitting down so his bum wouldn't be accessible -- while the other one "did the deed."

Once it was all done and the muzzle came off, he was so proud of himself, so happy that it was OVER, so thrilled that we were going to go home, that he didn't even bark at the girls while I was paying. (He barks as soon as we enter the building... until the muzzle is on.)

This is not a job for a 100-pound girl (me), even along with my husband who is not a dog person.

Thank God for patient groomers and vets.

I guess I truly lucked out; my beagle lets me clip her nails, brush her fur and bathe her without too much fuss.

She isn't fond of the NOISE of the dremmel, but once I get started -and kiss her cute face a few times- she's fine with it.

D&J, you poor thing! That seems like quite the task just to get a nail trim!

It's CRAZY! One of the girls there today asked me where I got my patience from. I told her that I'm one of the most impatient people ever, but I've got it in abundance for Artie. Why? I'm not sure.

You definitely lucked out with your girl! Artie LOVES getting brushed -- SPA DAY!!! -- and he tolerates bathing just fine. It's the nail clipping that puts him completely over the edge.
