Kona is 10 years old but is amazing physical shape and still acts like a much younger dog. Wants nothing more than to play with her Kong all day long.

Recently, she has something that appears to be an occasional leg spasm in her right rear leg---it looks as if she has a cramp and sometimes it shakes in the way that a dog shakes it leg when you scratch their chest. She will then sit down and lick her paw as if doing so will help the problem or the possible pain. Minutes later she's up and ready to go again.

This has happened during her playtime and even in the middle of the night (it woke me up). My husband thinks it's an age-related neurological issue but I'm curious to see if any of you have seen this with your own dogs.

Thanks in advance.

Might be sciatica and/or referred pain from a back problem. You should have him seen by a vet and x-rayed to determine if that could be the cause - really not that uncommon at all, particularly with older dogs who seem to develop some degeneration or spinal stenosis....much as we do with aging. Your dog isn't diabetic by any chance? That will also cause peripheral neuropathy, which can cause a lightning-like sensation.

Just guessing - your vet is your first line of defense!
