I saw Missy's story on our local news last night. The story was poorly reported/edited. It wasn't clear whether or not the owner tried to get Missy down or not. I saw a photo with Missy, the owner and either the owner's family or friends. Clearly he knows "some people" who could've helped him retrieve Missy even if he had to temporarily leave her there to get help.
He is obviously an irresponsible owner. I don't take my dogs hiking on 14ers because the top can get pretty jagged with rocks. He would've known that she was injured if he actually cared. The fact that he had a friend with him and they both determined that they couldn't get the dog down safely is even more appalling.
I saw a documentary where a guy crossed the US with his two Bernese mountain dogs and they both wore shoes to keep the pads from wearing out. Has anyone made hiking boots for dogs yet?

There are quite a few dog "boots" out there. My sweet old Lab needed them when he was 15 -- that was 10 years ago. We got him Ruff Wear boots which were the only ones around at the time. Ruff Wear Dog Boots
Just saw your post proveick... those look almost exactly like the ones my dog had.
he was pretty dumb not only to leave dog on mt but to later think he could claim it without having to answer for abandoning it in the first place.
