I have a hard time talking to people in a non-judgmental way about this. Do my cats sometimes scratch things I wish they wouldn't? Well, yeah, THEY'RE CATS. So I use my brain as their adult care-giver and buy lots of scratching posts, those little round toys with cardboard in the middle and a ball circling the rim (all my cats absolutely LOVE them and vastly prefer to scratch THEM than any furniture), etc. There are also little caps that you can put on kitties' paws (I have never tried that but have read success stories with them).

Given all these things, I can't figure out why anyone would declaw -- would AMPUTATE PARTS OF THEIR KITTIES' BODIES -- when there are other options. And the idea that it's similar to spaying/neutering is so ridiculous I can't even comment on it.

Many countries have BANNED the practice because it is inhumane and brutal. I would never go to a vet that even DOES the practice because clearly their philosophy is very different than mine.

Folks, this is the DOG forum and we've gone way off topic - there is no way to knit this thread back together even with a lot of editing, and there's dog info in here somewhere.

I'm closing this thread - it can be reopened under Awareness and Education in whichever forum, but unfortunately it can't be in both.
