Both Labs and GSD are considered a medium breed dog because they usually fall within the 40 to 80 pound range. Although I have had labs that were bigger than 80 pounds (Shasta was a black lab/golden retriever mixed female that weighed 100+ pounds), and I have known GSD also larger than 80 pounds. Large breed dogs are in the 80 to 120 pound range. Giant breed dogs range 120 pounds and up.

My Greater Swiss Mountain Dog has been amazing. My next large breed will be a Newfoundland. Possibly a Leonberger. They are my favorite top 3 large breed dogs. All would be suitable for your climate also. Read about the temperament of all 3. They are all protective, but not aggressive, and great with kids.
