Potty Time: Outside for a dog. Where?
This may be the most basic of questions and I didn't see it outlined in a book. I apologize in advance if this is obvious to you. :
Where do you designate your dog to potty outside of the home? In your yard ? (if so where in the yard), in your neighbor's yard (I didn't think that would be appropriate)? An open field 1/8 or even 1/4 mile away?

My dog decides that on his own! He's very particular about potty-time, especially "number two," so I don't really have to interfere. Believe it or not, he potty-trained himself at 3 months old, only 2 days after I brought him home. Where we live now, he poops in a specific spot of the yard... It's a tiny city-yard, so he picked one of the only spots with dirt/pebbles. As for peeing, he'll do that on walks as a marking thing (usually on a bush), or in another dirt spot of the yard. I dunno, never really thought about it beyond that.

My male uses the south side of the yard for number two and the female uses the north and some times the west side of the yard. The male urinates on either the tree, the fence or marks on tops of the female's
If you're wanting your dog to use a specific area take him/her out to that area and when they go praise, praise PRAISE him/her.

Our girl doesn't like to do "number two" in our yard. In fact, I've never seen her do it in our yard. She's "dainty" LOL. Dogs will pee just about anywhere. Just as cleosmom stated above, praise is a great reinforcer for getting the results you want, where you want them.

I live in a major city and always make sure my dogs poop in the courtyard before I take them for a walk. Once in awhile, they go in a public place and I have grocery bags to handle that when it happens. Some folks amaze me about this issue. My neighbor has a dog but they refuse to let him go in the yard but instead take him to the park to do his business.
