Well I have a very rough two year old. Yelling and redirection do not always work. And if it is not the toddler being rough, it is the puppy roughing up and chewing on the other dogs. Crate / nap time is the highlight of my day!
Funny thing is that all the kids and dogs get along great when dad is home. It is only an issue with me. No one listens to me
This reminded me of a girl who lived across the hall from me when I lived in an apartment many, many years ago.
She had a 4 year old daughter and had just gotten a kitten. She caught the her daughter twisting the kitten's ear.....she promtly reached right over and twisted her daughter's ear the same way and asked her how did she like it.
Maybe in your house you do, but not in my house. I never struck my child, my dogs, or my horses, and all 3 species were always extremely well behaved.
What works is very clear rules that are clearly explained and always enforced. Animals in training, and that includes human children, require a great deal of attention focused on them. Rules must be consistent. "No" must mean no every time and not just on every other Thursday. Bad behavior must be stopped every time and good behavior substituted right then and there. Every time; not just when your favorite TV show is over and you have time during the commercials.
Kids really take a great deal of time and focus because you really should not be shutting them into a dog crate when you can't watch them. That makes dogs easier to raise. But parenting is a choice and a commitment, so if you have kids, get off your lazy rump and activiely participate in raising them up to be decent human beings. They aren't going to learn manners or proper behavior out of thin air and they certainly won't get it from watching TV or video games.
Bravo, I so agree.
I was slack jaw reading some of these posts.
Educated, informed people actually hit and/or inflict pain to teach right from wrong?
No, actually they dont.

Certainly not PC by today's standards.
I bet the child stopped abusing the cat after that.

Either that or the child got sneakier about abusing the cat and grew up to abuse her own children because she was taught that children should be hurt badly at random times.

Oh geeez, here we go.
