Depends on the breed. I've read several cases of Bulldogs that died of heat stroke after or while being walked. In fact, way back when - I went to another High Schools Homecoming Parade (I was a cheerleader for my school at the time) and their mascot was a Bulldog. It died during the parade...
The bulldogs probably died from the fact it was too hot out to take them on a long walk as due to that short smooshed muzzle they can not cool off as fast as other breeds so are very prone to heat stroke. On hot days they should not be outside running or walking long distances. My brother walks his 3 in the evenings when it is cooler and they can go on some long walks. I also knew a lady in town that had one that did agility and She and the dog did walks that were several miles long every morning ( once again it is coooler out then).
We used to have a cat who followed us around the block when we walked the dog and he would get tired and cry to be picked up and carried. We made quite a site.
We used to have that same cat*! She would sometimes lag behind to check something out and then sprint to catch up to us, meowing as she ran. It was a cute site and it was fun to say "Going out to take the cat for a walk!"
My brother's doxie used to never get tired but now that he's almost 9, he can do about a mile or two and then he will just stop and stare at you so you carry him the rest of the way.
My toy poodle (RIP) Sugar at her old age used to stop and have me pick her up half way through our walks, mind you our walks were short too.
Both I think are because of age not size though.
