My family got this puppy back in November and we got him all the what puppy needs like puppy food. We called the vet and got him a checkup so the hole family went. The vet said he was good to go. He got his shots and trying to find out what he is, even the vet could not figure what he is. They said that he would weigh about 30 lb and no more.Than one day we got up the puppy could not get up and walk around in the house and even go outside to do his business. we had to hold him up and than we got a hold of our vet and we took him in and they said that he not drinking alot of water and not eating like he should be. They did they some test and said that he have HOD and said that they never saw it in a puppy. At the time our puppy was 5 1/2 months old and he is on a pill that is helping him now. But if he miss a part of the pill you can see it that he does not fell good.
if were talking about the same HOB is very odd your vet said its "unusual in puppies" since Hypertrophic osteodystrophy is most common in large and giant breed puppies between 2-7 months of age.
its actually verycommon in giant breed puppies being fed sub qulity or "puppy food" (too much calcium suplimentation in the food being the assumed reason, (they add calcium to "support" the rapid growth or large breeds but its been shown to be etrimental instead, and foods lacking Vit-C...
it is also frequently a side effect in large-giant breeds of distemper.
HOD is the reason any GOOD breedr working with giant breed dogs is so strict about diet...ect.
the good news is, with GOOD diet, pain killers (an depending on severity other meical steps) it is treatable and puppy can and maea full recovery.
HOD is much rarer in small-medium breed puppies and is more often linked to distmper than diet.
What breed?
What med was he prescribed?
Has he had any x-rays or other diagnostics?
We think that he is a Jack Russel Terrier but he also have a tough of brindle in him. He did not have any x-rays but the vet said that he did see it older dog and in puppy so young. We did have to move from puppy food to adult food. The meds is Prednisone.
