Does anybody know why an English bulldog or perhaps another breed as well will sit on his butt and than jumps up like he gets bitten and often moves his head from left to right like he is air biting?

It is hard to explain but we have checked the dogs for fleas, ticks, any other bites and nothing...no anal glands issues either.

We can see that one ear has more wax and make sure it is clean and have used the ear wash and dry ear.

But we have a hard time finding out what is wrong. The dog seems not to be in any pain and doesn't act different aside from this...and perhaps someone recognizes the symptoms.

Thanks in advance.

My 110-lb Yellow Lab does something like that. She'll sit, arch her back, nose up, and almost look like she's scratching her butt without the scooting that usually comes with that. Labs actually smile when they're happy and she's smiling away while doing this. As she's healthy, I think it's either some body language that we don't understand or, it simply feels good. Maybe you could film it on your phone camera and show your vet. Let us know what the verdict is, please.

A lot of Bulldogs have screw tails that form crevices and gaps under the tail where moisture can cause inflammation and bacteria to grow. They are usually snapping air because they are too short and thick to turn around and bite their rear end to scratch it, like many dogs can do.

If he has pockets under his tail, keep them clean and pull a dry washcloth under the tail to help keep it dry, and itch it for him down in there.

Other breeds that do it are usually having issues with fleas biting them at the base of their tail where they cant reach it.

My bulldog does that when she is in pain. She has a leg injury that cannot be operated on. She is on pain meds daily. I would certainly consider a Vet visit. A dog's nature is too hide injuries.
