It is that time of year, I'm mailing off checks for my dogs' licenses tomorrow because the deadline is March first.

Not only that, Genesee county hires extra people to go door-to-door every year checking for unlicensed dogs. And they are serious about it - a neighbor got busted for not licensing his dog, then before he could pay he had a stroke and wound up in hospital for a month and they issued a warrant for his arrest. (He did get that worked out.)

State law requires a rabies vaccination every three years (after the initial puppy vax and one-year "booster.") Spayed or neutered dogs are $10 a year, intact dogs are $25 per year.

Licenses here are $5 for a spayed/neutered dog and $20 for an unaltered dog. It was about the same where I used to live. No one checked up on it in either town.

Unlicensed dog fine is $300.

$8.45 -- Male or Female
$6.45 -- Male or Female -- Fixed
$6.45 -- Male or Female -- Disabled Discount
$4.45 -- Male or Female -- Disabled Discount -- Fixed

Even though my dogs are fixed, I pay the higher price because I don't bother sending vet documentation.

No extra fines if picked up by the dog catcher---it's equal opportunity extortion of demanding $80 cash from all owners.

They don't check in my county. They don't even bother checking records to see when owners lapse. I only sporadically license my dogs every few years when I think to do it.

Rabies shots are required but they aren't connected to the dog licenses. If you refuse rabies shot (as I did for my older dog in his later years), the vet simply marks the vet record.

I thought that was the main point of licensing dogs. Both the counties I've lived in with dogs require a rabies certificate when you get your license.

Where I live now:
$20/year if your dog is not neutered or spayed. $17/year is he/she is.
You must provide proof of rabies vaccine in order to get said license.

Where I'll be moving soon:
$30/year if your dog is not neutered or spayed. $15/year if he/she is.
You must provide proof of rabies vaccine in order to get said license.

Chiroptera -- They go door-to-door?!?! What the hell? They've got nothing better to do? My gosh.

I paid $28.00 for a lifetime license for an altered dog. I think it was $35.00 for unneutered. They required a neuter certificate from the vet along with proof of rabies

They are two separate things here. We have dog licenses and rabies licenses. Both are metal tags issued by the county.

I suspect it's their way of raising revenue, similar to speed traps.
