Hi,

I'm going to try this formula for my puppy, who has just been diagnosed with Parvo.
The vet wants about $700 for the treatment and we just can't afford that.

She went without food for three days and yesterday the test was done, and they
gave her an anti-bacterial shot. When we got her home she finally starting eating,
so hopefully it's a good sign. She ate again first thing this morning.

No signs of vomit or bleeding stool, so the vet says it's a good sign.

She's a stray that we took in and we didn't understand that the parvo protection
was a set of four shots. Somewhere between 5-6 months old, hopefully her immune
system, plus whatever we can add in terms of this formula plus nutrition will get
her through the next week.

If it does, the vet says she'll likely be okay.

Am I reading this correctly, a 35 ml dose every four hours? That's just over an ounce
of the formula.

Hope you see this.

Thanks.

My dog is 7 months old I think she has largo, she threw up twice last night, an then the third was more like bile an foam. She's becoming lethargic, for sure not her normal self, my neighbors dog just died of largo about 5 days ago, so..... she has been so kind to give me the prescriptions the vet sent her home with and an overall bag, but about two weeks ago my dog got sick an was throwing up and had diarrhea that wasn't black but a reddish color an smelled like death!! After a week of close attention an 24 hour care at home she pulled through. Could this be largo, could she have had it last time also? I'm a single mom with three kids an health problems, I'm on a tight budget and can't go to the vet, I could use some advice please....

Take the dog to the vet. Parvo is nothing to mess with at home.

This is posted as FWIW (for what it's worth) and is my experience
with the charcoal formula and a parvo diagnosis.

I posted on 6-19 that my pup had given a positive test. I couldn't
afford the vet treatment of $700 so they gave her an anti-bacterial
shot, plus advised to keep her hydrated and feed her a bland diet.

Side note: we were told by the vet that leaving her for treatment
gave her no better than a 50-50 chance of survival.

She had refused some fairly pungent food for three days and I was
skeptical that boiled white rice and chicken breast would entice her
to eat.

The first two times I put it out for her she didn't touch it and I feared
the worst. Then, the next day she took it and gobbled it down.

We came across the post in this forum (and others) with the mixture
featuring charcoal and Pedialyte, and decided to try it.

We gave her 30-40 ML of the following mixture:

50% Pedialyte
50% drinking water
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon activated charcoal

At first we gave it every four hours, then tapered it to 4X daily, and
then 2X.

That's it. Nothing else...except daily prayers from a lot of people.

Her energy level jumped almost immediately. From being lethargic
she began running around like normal. That was highly encouraging.

We are now 17-18 days since she first refused food, some two weeks
since the diagnosis. Our pup has shown no symptoms at all.

We're keeping up the formula and diet for another 10-14 days and,
by then, I'm told we can consider her out of the woods by anyone's
standards.

Will this work for you and your dog? I don't know. There are a
lot of home remedies that are listed in the multitude of forums.

If we had the cash and could have bought the antibiotics and IV bags,
we probably would have done that, along with supplies for vomiting,
etc. It's said that saves anywhere from 50-75% of what a vet will
charge.

As we've learned, parvo doesn't kill your dog. Dehydration and
secondary infections do. There's a lot of work involved if you
don't go the vet route, and you can do everything right...yet
still lose the dog.

We believe that God spared our pup.

We know that others will reject that and say that the test gave a
false positive.

Or that she had an extremely mild case of parvo and survived it.

Or that the antibiotic shot given the day of diagnosis was what
turned things in her favor.

Other may agree that the concoction listed above did the trick.

I don't intend to argue the issue.

This is just our experience. Your mileage may vary.

Best wishes and prayers for those looking for answers and fearing
the worst. There is hope.

How much charcoal would you give a 5 lb Chihuahua and how often. I took him to the vet on Tuesday 7th for the parvo vac. We noticed he was becoming ill on Sunday. I have been using Pepto-Bismol and pedeolight up till today. He still is not eating or drinking on his own. Chris S

I am trying to wrap my head around why you would not take your dog to a vet after he didn't improve in 48 hours. How do you conclude that it is parvo related, especially the vaccination was done almost a week ago before he became ill? Is it possible he ate something bad, didn't act right on Sunday, and your doses of pepto made him feel worse?

I'm going to be blunt about this since your little dog can't with you: take him to the vet. Spend that $45 vet visit to have a licensed, professional who sees this every day to give you his real diagnosis, not what you think it may be. He could tell you it's probably nothing, which by th way, is what you want and worth that $45+. Or your dog has gotten worse because you didn't bring him in sooner.

Charcoal? Seriously?
