I have a Bichon Frise that I just got from a rescue and he is wonderful. I had a Shih Tzu before but never saw this behavior. He will walk along the entire perimeter of a couch and rub his body (left shoulder) along the whole thing. He did that to the other couch, too.

After a bath, he did that rub against the perimeter of the laundry room.

Has anyone ever seen this behavior? What does it mean? Is it specific to a Bichon or other dogs do it, too?

I was trying to make an appointment with 2 vet offices without success (in between patients). I will try again tomorrow. I heard the Herschel Clinic was good to go (from several owners).

He's marking his territory with his scent.

I see....

I thought they pee to do that.

I check his skin to make sure he doesn't have bugs or sores. I massaged his muscles and felt his skeletal structures to make sure he wasn't 'deformed' or had some mass - which he didn't.

Our dog rubs on one spot on the wall when she's excited. I'm not sure why, but she's always done it.

Interesting! I've never had a dog do that! My cat does though, so it certainly makes sense that's it's a marking thing.

I do have a dog that licks everything.....it's really cute, when she lies down to take a nap, she gives the pillow a good long licking session before settling in with it .

yup you're new addition is marking. There are scent glands somewhere around his face/ears (i forget exactly where). My malamute/shepard does this especially when he's happy (which is all the time). Parker (my mal) rubs his face on the arm of the couch, sides of my bed, sides of his bed and the carpet in the hall.

Shadow uses the couch, chairs, door mat, carpet, end of the bed (you get the idea) to scratch her face. Yeah! Black dog hair everywhere!

Is this your first pooch? I have 3, 2 of them rub the couch, chair and foot stool. I have had dogs in the past that have done the same. It can possibly be ear mites but my bet is that he's marking.

Now, that all of you mention it. He is rubbing his face into the couch.

It is the first dog. No mites.

Could also be allergies. They rub their faces on the carpeting or wherever to relieve itching.
